Bird Experience I've got... just not Macaw experience... LOL

Hello everyone!

While we do have birdie experience... we've been asked to take in three unwanted birdies due to a move, a quaker, a mexican red head amazon, and a b&g macaw. I have experience with all except that macaw. To be honest, I have met only two macaws, only held one, and haven't really ever been around them so any ideas/tips would be greatly appreciated! I do not know her age, only that she is female. We will get all their info on thursday when we go to pick them up (I hope!).

I do know that her cage is 5'x2 1/2'x7' so I am not worried about her accomodations. If she is toyless, we have plenty to share with her. I know their attitudes are a bit different than my other fids... and this is definatly going to be an adventure!

Anyway... any advice would be greatly appreciated. The one macaw I have met was a Ruby and she was a sweetheart! I will attach pics once we get her home on Thursday.

Hey, Good Luck. It should be a lot of fun over at your house...a lot of fun and a lot of vacuuming.

Watch for dust from the Toos and the grey. B&Gs are particularly suseptable to breathing difficulties from the dust, and although there are some that show no problems, caution should be taken. having an air filter nearby is a great help.
They are loves though! They can also be stinkers, escape artists, nosey... and pure joy!

LOL Lots and lots of vacuuming... no joke!

Love my beak, I'll keep that in mind :) We are really looking forward to it! Not sure about the Quaker though... I hope this one is quieter... yeah right!

As for the dust, we are getting filter systems in the house and these three will be in their own room. And thank you for that info, I was not aware of that!

Let the games begin! You are gonna have fun. Just read alot. They do like to test their owners alot, but are sweethearts. But you will get used to it and eventually be able to read his/her body language. Of course we will all be here for you if you run into any situations.

B&G's are giant balls of feathery love.

...just don't leave them near your bedroom furniture.

LOL Away from bedroom furniture huh? We've been lucky so far with only minor wall damage since the goffin's like to chew on the door jams. They are going to be in a bedroom and we're taking the bed out of that room to make enough room for the huge cages that the amazon and the B&G come in.

We are really excited about getting her and no matter what kinds of issues she might have, she's certainly got a forever home here with us! I've done a lot of reading on the internet like I did with all my other birdies so at least we're not totally in the dark but I love the fact that I can come here and get a hand if I need it... that is appreciated so so so so so so much!

Just wanted to add that we found out a bit more about her tonight. Her name is Minga and she is about 8 years old. She prefers men and the female in the home she is currently in can feed and water her, end of story. My hubby is a bit afraid of macaw beaks so this is surely going to be an adventure! He hopes she will bond to me since I am the one here all of the time and official flock leader. We'll see when she gets here Wednesday.
