Are you talking about PDD? Proventricular Dilation Disease?

It's almost certainly fatal to birds that show symptoms. Afflicted birds basically starve to death because they can't digest their food. They also suffer from other maladies related to this disease. Try googling for it. You should be able to find lots of info out there. Enough to break your heart, really....

Yeah, PDD is what I ment. Sorry. There's a new test in trials at Texas A&M. And there's a trial for treatment there also. We took Piper there today for the trials. It looks like that's why we're having so much problem with her. We didn't relize how bad she was until my husband saw a 3 month old there that was twice the size of Piper and had a full, beautiful set of feathers. What I'm looking for is feedback from anyone who has first hand experience with this disease. We should know tomorrow if she tests positive. We're going to have to make the decision of putting her through the trials and hoping she gets better (but risking her going through more pain) or putting her out of her misery. It's a horrible decision to have to make.

I am so sorry that you and Piper are having to go through this. I don't personally know of anyone who currently has a bird with PDD. I do know, however, that someone donated a young macaw who was diagnosed with PDD to Texas A&M, and the bird is currently doing very well, the last time I heard.

E-mail from the doctor PIPER DON'T HAVE PDD but here a letter from her doctor please pray for here that she is going to be fine i can't tell you how much we have spent in doctor bills and this is before taking her to specialist i just wish that her vet would have sent us sooner its killin me that she is 4 hr away from me GOD i hope she is get though all of this

Piper is bright and actually eating fairly well on her own. We did not get a definitive diagnosis on the fine needle aspirate and cytology. they were not able to tell me what this mass is. We will have to go in surgically. Due to the size of this mass, if we do not determine what it is, it will kill her.

Monday we can go in and get a biopsy, evaluate it, and determine if we can safely remove it. She is obviously high risk for surgery due to her emaciation and long length of illness. But I feel we don't have any other choice. I will call you tomorrow and update you on her progress and discuss your feeling on surgery. Piper is so sweet, we have all gotton attached to her already, she is getting lots of attention :)

Sincerely

Dr Hoppes

Kim

Update from Piper doc I know she will pull through it because she has a strong heart but they don't know what the mass is yet they can cut it out as long as it hasn't grown to any of her main organs i hope not but wont know anything till tomorrow and if it has then i will have to put her to sleep the doctor told me that there is a lot of blood going to the mass i am so stupid to this stuff but i understand what she is saying
:o((

Piper is doing well this morning, and is letting us hand feed her. I
will call in the morning and update you and discuss the surgery

Sincerely
