How Many of Your Macaws Are MOLTING?

Hello everyone,

Just thought I would find out if everyone's Macaws are molting. Mine is and he is getting a bunch of new feathers. He is also Tempered at times but he loves it when you help him out around his neck with those new feathers that he can't reach very well. It looks like it has snowed in our living room everyday. We can't wait till he gets all his new feathers. As most that know me, know what the breeders did with his landing gear feathers.. He has been getting a lot better with balance now. He has came along a lot in the past 2 months. We are in the process of getting him a New cage Saving up that is.. LOL Its gonna be a 64 X 34 X 72. Thought that would be big enough. :aiwebs_02 Well would like to hear about what everyone elses Macaws are doing with their Molt. Take care

Alf, my Hahn's is just finishing a molt. She started about a month ago. Not only do I see less pin feathers to preen for her but she is acting happier. Not that she was bad but definatly better now that it is about over.

Nimo had his big moult about a month or so ago. Now he is back to regular preening. He does pluck his side during mating season, and that seems to be getting better as well. Of course the crazy weather we've been having in NJ with it 70 one day and 50 the next doesn't help either. Pamela

Yup. Same snowstorm here. I actually thought that The Fabulous Margarita was pulling feathers for there were so many body feathers. I am please to say that nope, its just time to molt body feathers. My macaws did wings and tails about a month ago. I suggest you really increase sweet potatoes, squash, carrots and pumpkin during the entire molt cycle. They really benefit from the beta carotien (sp) and extra vitamin A and C.I recently posted a sweet potato, orange juice and peanut butter mash that I highly recommend. Most birds seem to really like it and its very easy.

Simply cook a couple of sweet potatoes until fork tender. Remove the skins and smash with a fork. Add the juice from one fresh orange (not from a carton, please) and 1 TBs of peanut butter. Serve this warm. My birds like the bowls on this stuff.

Please increase showers too. It will help to soften the sheaths.

I have been Giving Stitch A bath Everynite here lately with all the new feathers coming in. Last night he was getting his bath a jumped off the top of his cage and I couldn't catch him an he landed in the floor but on the way down his wing hit the side of the cage an one of his Wing feather came out. Luckily it was ready to come out. Yall don't know how glad I will be when he gets all his new feathers. Cause He has not gliding ability right now cause the breeders cut his landing gear feathers.

It is a dust bowl around here as well. All of mine are molting, though the macaws have slowed down. Ms. Cookie is still molting badly; poor baby!

we have the molting thing going on here as well. Jasper isn't real fond of the shower thing, but I DID manage to get him in there! it involved mommy in the shower enticing the big boy in. lets just say he did get good and wet and I got plenty of funny looks from him.

the lady I got him from said she gave him showers all the time. I know that must be a lie as he was real skittish from the first about the shower but is getting better. plus he likes the play/preen time after he gets out, so maybe he is getting the idea its a good thing for him.
