Clipped Wings
When I bought my 5month old B&G macaw I got one of his wings clipped but he still seems to fly about 20--30 feet and I am afraid he will hurt himself or fly off on me any suggestions please

Cliped Wings
Wing clipping is ususally done with the first 6 primary feathers. Count the ones that have been clipped on your bird to see if this is the number that has been clipped. I don't clip down to the coverts and this will tend to make the bird fall straight down hence injuring himself. I do leave about a inch and a half (on macaws) from the coverts which will have them glide down which is safer.
I sometimes do a parital clip on birds when they are babies depending upon circumstances at that time. In this case, I don't take off all six primaries but more like 4 of them. |
