Question ? about finding a mate for our B&G Macaw

We just adopted a 8yr old male B&G Macaw. He had a cage mate before with his prev owner. But the owner kept the other bird and gave us this one.

He seems so lonely and was wondering what kind of birds we can think of keeping an eye out for to adopt sooner or later to make our little guy more happier.

thank you in Advance

I have a blue and gold coming her friends right now are my 2 greenwings that are being raised with her. But they aren't going to be cage mates. They are going to be able to play outside of the cage together. Remember that you might be able to get another bird to be friends with your blue and gold.

It's always hit or miss whether birds wil actually get along or not. If you were to get a second bird I believe you would need to keep it in its own cage, at least for awhile but quite possibly as its permanent home.

If you just got this new bird what you may be witnessing is his reaction to this major change and upheaval in his life. As he settles into his new life and routine he will, most likely, relax. I would give him some time to adjust to you and his new home before taking in another bird if your main reason for doing so is to give him a friend.

Good luck and congratulations.

I agree with Tom. Let him get use to his new home first & then decide.
Congrats on your new baby!

Would we have to breed with another B&G or could we find him like a pretty colored one like a Eclectus?

Even w/o breeding Since a B&G is so huge would they even play well with others birds like eclectus

I don't think an eclectus and and Blue and Gold could mate, but there are so many crazy hybrids lately not much surprises me. You can, however, mate a Blue and Gold with another mutation of macaw, such as a Scarlet or almost any other color! I have seen some gorgeous mutations. I don't know if it would be safe for them to play together since the size difference, but have seen things like that happen as well.

Sometimes this idea bothers me...not to judge anyone or anything...

Aren't pair bonds supposed to be for life? Or is that not so with Parrots?

I would definitely give it a bit of time to see how he adjusts. Thrusting a new mate on him may not be what he wants.

I honestly can't tell if you want to breed them, or you're afraid of them breeding!

8 is barely, baaarely old enough TO breed with the larger macaws. So, he'd be right in that maturity age-frame. However, B&G macaws are getting to be very over-bred, so much so, you can get hand-fed, socialized babies now for about 600.00!

I would not get an Eclectus in the hopes of the two birds being friends. Don't buy your bird friends, buy a bird because YOU want the bird.

If you get your Macaw a buddy, if they get along - whether they're male or female, they will start to bond and unless you work at it, exclude you entirely. Make certain your macaw is bonded to you before you get a new one.

MissV: Parrots are monogamous quite like people are. So so. Some aren't at all, some are to a point. No psittacine is entirely so.
