Cool Bird Sanctuary shared this idea...

Last saturday, I visited a bird sactuary with hundreds of macaws and other parrots.

The owner shared this idea. She takes Cling Wrap and winds it around the bottom of the cage. She continues wrapping it, on up to about half way from the top. The wrap keeps the seeds and mess contained inside the cage. With some birds it will last a year, with others less.

I have not tried it yet. Thought I would share this idea with everyone.

My only concern is that if a bird could reach the plastic, they could chew it and ingest it. Also...it seems like it might be pretty hard to wipe the dust and stuck food off cling wrap. Changing it all the time could be an option, but I wou;dn't think so with someone caring for a large flock. I would be curious to see how this was done.

That sure wouldnt last long on my bgms cage. She would enjoy ripping it to shreds not to mention it sounds abit unsanitary. Not worth the bother. The vacuum cleaner is quicker and more effective.

I am a fan of the plastic that goes under office chairs. It makes it easy to swipe and mop. Puppy pads are helpful too.

My U2 would go right thru like a knife! I would definitely be afraid he would inhale such lightweight pieces.

All of you make sense. I still haven't done it. The lady at the sanctuary told me it was a trick that took her 20 years to learn. But, I wondered...one big Poop SPLAT...DRIP...and yuk slimey plastic. I want to try it and willl really watch Captain when the Cling Wrap is new to see if he starts chewing it.

I wondered it this Cling Wrap idea might stop Captain from climbing down his cage to walk on the floor. Maybe it will keep him on top of the play gym part. I'll let you all know when I do this.

Agree with the others here... don't see the advantage, but see lots of potential dangers. I could see a bird easily choking on pieces, suffocating, etc. That stuff only sticks when you DON'T want it to (like to a bird's insides?) Plus it would get dirty so fast. The more I think about it, the more it seems like the equivalent of putting plastic bags in a baby crib... a bad idea. I'd rather vacuum than deal with plastic wrap on my birds' cages.

Wow, what if they breathe it in and choke? That stuff would be impossible to get out of their throat. That kind of scares me. I freak out if I leave a plastic bag on the top of the cage and the bird gets to it. I wonder how it works for her?

I found a fantastic alternative to this: calendared vinyl. You can get it from tapplastics.com by the yard. It's virtually see through, so you can't even tell it's on the floor. It's a cinch to clean and the thickness I buy is only like 3 something per yard at 5 ft wide. I got enough to go under my 40 something by 20 something and 64 by 32 inch cages AND had enough to cover the bottom of two T stands for about 20 or 30 something (with shipping).

Meanwhile, those office thingies...just two of them, assuming one was big enough for each...would have run me 60.

Yea I definitely see some problems arising. Keeping it clean for one thing and also my birds eating it (and I know those little buggers would eat it). I just use newspaper under the cage - I know its not the prettiest in the world but it does the job and is easy to change. I also vacuum once a day all the seeds and feathers and dust - quick and easy clean up.
