On your back, dagommit!

So, forgive me, because my motives are incredibly shallow...

But the one thing that drives me nuts about Etienne is he doesn't seem to want to be on his back...ever. Even hanging upside down outside of his cage does not seem to be favorable to him.

I've seen hooardes of macaws on their backs--it almost seems standard...and no, I'm not going to just try to force him (you try that with a bgm then get back to me o.0) . But my teeth gnash with jealous when I see pics of others doing it so easily....

Is this something I need to introduce to him? Eti's only not quite 8 months, so is it just a whipper snapper thing? I've no clue. He's cool with climibing upside down on his cage, and up and down his play thing...but going on his back is no go. he's not really a fan of being on the floor either, in general. I'm wondering if this is because he spent the majority of his time on stands and ropes and such at the breeders (he was sort of...out on display with his sister).

Like I said, this is pretty much based on my desire of going "Awwww, cute!" but I really just want him to be comfortable in general...I'm not a fan of being limited in what I can do and I don't want him to be either.

Ramble ramble ramble, anyway....any suggestions? How do I get this lil big guy to enjoy the flipside of things? (harhar!)

I've never been able to get Gabe to do it either. I understand your envy.

It is not important to me to have my macaw lay on her back. I just want her to be happy and love me..and she does more that I want but that is another thread.

Yeah yeah. Happiness is great.

But we're focusing right now on my shallow need to coo over even more cuteness.

Stay on topic!

I was expecting something else out of this thread topic...

Easy, super glue a board to her back, then flip her over and coo. Don't worry, she'll molt out eventually.

Wouldn't they just eat the board? Gabe's obsessed with chewing wood. Maybe some granite or marble....ohhhh, I saw a piece of gorgeous marble I wanted yesterday but couldn't come up with a good excuse to buy it.....

Actually, the board eating is a great concern of mine. I mean, they CAN turn their head pretty far. Perhaps some sort of vice like device (Teehee, DEvice, see what I did there?) to hold his head still...

And then I can coo all I want!

While wearing a lab coat.

Just cuz.

That is a GREAT idea!! Thanks for sharing!!! *by time they molt out..they should be used to being on their backs.... If mine weren't already ........I would surely try!

With a macaw, if your certain individual was into that sort of thing, he would have let you do it the day you brought him home.

At least with my friends B&G thats how it was.
But maybe he's different because she handfed him herself.
She can pretty much handle him in anyway.

I've heard of birds doing it after years of trying..
I try with Tiki and he bites me for it sometimes. I'm just trying to get him use to it.
I wouldn't dare it with a macaws beak though lol
