Red Front Macaw or Citron Cockatoo

I am going to add another bird one of these days & these are the 2 I like most (so far). I'm kinda looking for a medium size bird.

I know there are no guarantees but do your red fronts get along with your larger macaw? What can you tell me about the personalities of either bird?

I would go with the red fronted macaw. They are incredible talkers. They have a very sweet but ornery disposition. They will cuddle like a cockatoo but are playful like other macaws. They are hilarious and entertaining. They do great with larger macaws. The ones I've known have had no problem with larger birds or smaller birds. You don't have to worry about the dust of toos or the split personality many toos suffer. One of the breeders on our board has a sweet looking little male for sale.....

I don't have any cockatoos but LOVE my RFM. Want more. He's the BEST. Our larger macaws are mean to him so we have to keep them apart but Rain wants to be friends with EVERYONE. He's very playful - even with some strangers. He always greets people who enter "his" room. Wouldn't trade him for a million dollars. On that note - I do have a military I'd be willing to trade for a million dollars!!

Here's a link to a picture of the rfm I was referring to in my post. Red Front Macaw For Sale In CA :: BirdBreeders.com
He has the orange belly that isn't overly common.

I want to get another one - female. I want babies!!!!!! My RFM is a clown. I would always suggest RF's to anyone who loves larger birds. He's a smaller size then the larger macaws but has way more personality.

OK - feel the need to love up on my B&G's who are totally awesome too. I think the reason my big birds are mean to Rain is because he demands attention with his personality. I think the big boys are jealous!

I haven't owned either, but personally, I'd go with a red front!

Just something about their personality, usually being considered one of the best large macaws because they are not normally known for being nippy like scarlets. I can't think of everything else at the moment, but I have heard that sulphur crested cockatoos, and similar species tend to be pretty high strung, not something I'm personally interested in.

But.... since I'm not you, all I can say is to go and interact with both species and see which one you are drawn to the most!

And did you want this thread posted elsewhere?

It sort of depends what you want. My Umbies are more needy but they are also more cuddly and loving. Sleep on your chest. Sit in your lap. My macaw won't do that.

But, my macaw is a hoot as well. Entertaining and fun to be around.

Maybe you should make a list of the upsides and downsides of each of the species and then decide what will fit best for you.
