welcome home blue and gold tony!! and questions!
hey guys, i adopted a blue and gold macaw named tony from a man who truely loved him, but he started feather plucking because he spent more time with the dog that has a handicapped then the bird. his wife said he became too much for them. so i adopted him. he has some feathers plucked on his chest, nothing near to what skye did. tony is 18 years old or so, and i have noticed he seems to breath heavy? not like he has having issues breathing, but breathes where you could hear it. he is doing so good though. if he is not up high on the cage perch thing, i can get him to "gimme foot" doesnt know step up or up. he has really done well with me as he will snuggle with me, and i can hold him, and give him kisses on the top of his head and beak. sometimes he gets scared and nippy. and omg he HATES his cage. i have the original one they gave me, and i have mine which is bigger, i just need to get clip on bowls because sundance took them all the hooks off! tony is eating, i gave him some peanuts today and he was so happy! he told me HELLO!! i got a wolf wistle this afternoon when i woke up from him! i let him hang out in my bed earlier around 8 am why i napped, he was funny, he played with the covers and his eyes got all dialated, saw him self in the mirror. its so neat to see his eyes so wide with wonder. i have never had an older bird before, so this is new. im owner #4. so sad. the owner made sure i knew that if i couldnt take care of him, he wants him back and he will give me a refund. i thought that was good, cuz it really showed how much he loved him, he also sent me a bunch of photos of him. i really feel bad he couldnt keep him, i know his heart is broken.
now the problems with my birds, they are not happy of course, they didnt attack but kinda went after him with the wings spread and grabbed his beak, i was right there, when they jumped on his cage, sundance is like ya know this isnt cool, but he doesnt go after him, now skye does, she was pretty mean yesterday, they were like wrestling kinda it looked mean to me, so of course i broke it up, but the more im watching skye with him, she jumped on me and the back of the chair where tony is perching, and they were grabbing each others beaks it looked rough to me, but it wasnt an attack, so i dont know if thats what they do? skye is a blue and gold and tony is a blue and gold. i did have skye attack a smaller bird i adopted a few years ago, and i know that i cannot have smaller birds here ever again, (i adopted the parrot to a good home after she bit him). so im just curious to see what you guys think. its not like ok im gonna go attack this bird, its im gonna stand my ground and let him know i am boss.
skye is really obnoxious she is like 5 years old or so, and watching tony who is really calm, even with his owner he was really calm. i noticed the difference in coloring where tony is darker then skye, and tonys irises, or the ring in his eye after the brown are green. is that because he is older im thinking?
you know what really amazes me is this bird is 18 years old and has multiple owners and is still really sweet, once he gets past being scared. now my sundance gw macaw i got as a 9 month old baby and i still really cant hold him, he is still skiddish. i can only hold him at night if i lay down on my pillow with him. i really wonder what happened to him that he is like that, where as this older bird with multi owners i can play with and snuggle with most of the time so far. i only got him yesterday. i have included him with me now and my other birds so he has the full attention he seems really happy. i work at home and am gonna pickup some late afternoon night hours when they are all calm and not loud. though tony has not screamed once, when my roommate started the shower and closed the bathroom door. other then that he is not screaming at all!
