need some advice on my new adopted macaw.

this is the first time i have had an older macaw, he is 18, i have had him since wed of last week. he has done really well, but he makes those baby cry sounds. i have had with me all times since i am home all the time. my other birds are in here with me too on a chair and the new macaw is on the back of a different chair with me. so i have noticed him crying, but it didnt really get to me until today. he is doing it alot, it seems like when i pet him he stops. im really concerned because when savannah was sick she made the cries like this too. but then so did skye when she was a baby and wanted to eat. i do have an apt with a vet in a few days, the man i adopted him from said he had been at the vet several months ago for a checkup and he was fine.

so could this be because he is in a new enviornment? or he misses his previous owner? this is all new to me. let me know what you guys think. he isnt like bowing down or taking his head all the way back and being a total baby. he is just crying. thanks.

It could be. It could also be his way of getting attention. He "cries" and you comfort him. He thus learns to do it more.

thats what the vet said too lol!!! he stoped crying late afternoon, now he is making his own bird sounds. almost sounds like what. he is really sweet which is shocking me since im the 4th owner. i can pick him up off the cage now without him biting me when i tell him up or foot. (the previous owner didnt use step up.) thanks.

THe old cry for attention routine! LOL!!!

Glad he is doing better.

Reminds me of a tiel I had for about a week. My sister heard I had a bird and thought that she would help me get a few more since I always take in strays....

Well I was a bit overwhelmed with my macaw so I gave him to a loving home.

While the tiel was with me he was fearful and bitey and screamy. As soon as we got in the car he changed. I got him to the new home and he was all sugary sweet.

Made me sadder to let him go but it was the right thing to do.

So it could have just been the move and sadness over missing his former owner.

My macaw sits behind me and makes a hmm hmm sound all the time. Are you sure it is a crying or just a contented murmurr. That is what mine does. But she is just content and hanging out.

Riley makes a purr/growl noise when she's relaxed. If she wants my attention there is a very distinct "HELP, OH MY GOSH, HELP!!" kind of yell. The big baby blue and gold at my work purrs too. So cute!!
