Sad Story & New Bird

Sorry so long...I just need to vent some.

People just never fail to amaze and disappoint me. Needless to say, I have another bird as of tonight.

I got an email a few days ago from a friend of mine who owns a bird specialty store, she sent it out to all of her friends who she knew had large bird experience. A customer of hers had gotten herself in over her head and needed help with her bird. This SWEET SWEET 70 year old woman had bought a "very tame" "MILITARY" Macaw.

Of course, when she got the bird home it pretty much tried to take her arm off for even being near the cage. This woman totally admits that she made a huge mistake in getting this bird, but from the sounds of it...she was really taken for a ride. She tried to return the bird to the woman (that was part of the deal...the lady would of COURSE take her back) and the lady kept putting her off and putting her off...then finally said that she was sorry, but she could be of no help.

Who could do this to a 70 year old woman? I mean REALLY? The lady lost her husband a year ago, and she has several small birds and a Congo African Grey that she totally adores. She LOVES her birds, and honestly...I think they are what keeps her going. It just makes me angry. I guess the lady she got the bird from didnt care about where her bird wound up at ALL. She knew damn well that this was WAAAAAAY to much bird for this woman.

Oh...did I mention that she is NOT a Military Macaw? She is a Miligold. I took one look at her and had to tell the lady that she didnt even have a Military Macaw, it was a hybrid... I just hate that she made such an expensive mistake...and I also hate that the woman who sold her this bird didnt give a darn about the birds well being whatsoever.

Needless to say, I went over two nights ago just to meet the bird. She tried to take my finger off and was very very nasty. I have spent the last two days at this womans house working with this bird. She has finally come around to me, and the woman was almost in tears. She said she couldnt believe the difference in the bird already and begged me to take it.

So...I have a Miligold Macaw now. Very unexpected, but I do... I just could not leave this bird with her. This Macaw would have seriously hurt her. It just makes me furious when I even think about it.

I have her stepping up for me, she will willingly let me towel her (her nails were horrible) She isnt lunging at me anymore, but she will nip. She allows me to scratch her head some...she isnt a BAD bird, but she needs ALOT of work to be a "tame" pet.

Anyway, thanks for letting me vent..... please send good vibes to my new girl "Hanna" (She was Hannibal until she laid an egg apparently)

Wow, that poor old women. At least now, she won't be missing fingers and the bird is in a good loving home that can handle her :)

I am so glad that you were there for not only this elderly woman but for the Macaw.

It is sad that some people look at their birds as just a "pet" and not a part of the family.
Disposable! These wonderful, beautiful, magestic creatures have such sensitive feelings.

Unfortunetly, there are people out there like his previous owner. It is just wonderful that you came in and are trying to do the best for all concerned.

I know that with patience and love you will be able to achieve good things. Obviously this poor parrot came with a lot of baggage. If only they could tell us what they feel and what has happened to them.

I send to you many good vibes and hugs. Keep us updated on Ms. Mili Macaw.

Thank you. I just re-read my post and I am sorry for rambling. It just is so sad to me that people do things like that.

Oh, another thing... I had to ditch the cage, I brought her home in an XL wire dog crate. The cage was infested with cockroaches and it infested this old womans sun room. I moved all of her birds to the garage for her and she has to have someone come out and exterminate the place. Im going to help her get all her birds situated again once it airs out and I can clean it up. I just left the cage. This whole thing has just been a nightmare for this poor old woman.

Hanna is 15 years young, I will try to get some pictures of her today. I have to find a good cage for her, right now she is living on a playstand in my bedroom and I am just taking her with me wherever I go. She is a smallish Macaw, but she is really taking to me well, she reminds me alot of my B&G who is my BABY.

I will keep you all updated. Thanks for listening. Only bird people understand...

Awww, a very happy ending to a really sad story. I really wish people would take "rehoming" or even "selling" birds more seriously. I think some people are in denial that their actions and decisions affect many others. I'm very happy to hear that Hannah is now safe and sound with someone who understands her! Good work!
