Talking

My Hannah approves! her cage is about the same size, and she is doing nicely in that size of a cage, but then again she is out all the time so she really doesn't need it for anything other than when I am gone and for sleeping.

Hannibal was a GREAT name for this bird... LOL. She can totally be a snot. She wants to be a good bird, but she is very very cage aggressive.

I am working with her with a clicker to overcome this, and it seems to be working. She is showing progress. She has regressed on "step up" but I know with some work we will get there.

Yesterday she was trying to preen my fingernails AND my teeth. She was regurgitating for me...she is a very nice bird away from her cage. I have put her back on the playstand for now where I can work with her during the day. I took the swing out of her cage and lowered her perches while I am working on the cage aggression issues.

We will get there....one day at a time.

lol, it's funny to think that her old owner thought she was a military macaw. Maybe you should have to pass a test before getting a bird.

So this morning I was being mean and I brought my B&G into my bedroom and was loving on her right in front of Hannas Cage. She watched VERY closely. It actually made her want to come out and away from her cage. I put JoJo up and ignored Hanna for a bit, then came and opened the cage, she climbed down and stepped right up for me! That is coming a LONG way for her! I lavished her with praise and brought her out onto the playstand. I rewarded her with a slice of cheese. Everything was great..she LOVED the cheese..then she dropped part of the cheese and was leaning over and looking down like she wanted it...I went to hand it to her and she almost took my finger off. Dumb move on my part... one step forward, one step back. Sigh.... She is a very territorial bird. I have never dealt with a bird like her before, it has kind of been trial and error the last few days. I have delt with nippy, even biting birds...but never one to the degree that she is. I just cannot beleive this bird was pawned off on a 70 year old woman. It just blows my mind to even think about. Not a good situation for the bird nor the woman.

I can tell she WANTS to interact with me, but she can be pretty evil. It is almost like she is torn on what to do, but she does have serious cage aggression issues that we are going to have to work through (and hopefully keep all of my hands and fingers intact in the mean time) I think I have probably rushed her a bit, and that is my bad and something that I know better than to do...I am going to slow down with her.

I dont care what it takes, I am going to do everything I can to make sure that she is happy here. I am going to get her to my avian vet next week and I may consult a behaviorist.
