When I adopted Lola I just let her hang out on top of her cage and when I would walk by I would stop and talk to her, call her name or offer her a treat. She was OK but you could tell she was still not 100% about me.
You have to understand they are in a new place, a new cage and with a new human so, it is a lot for them to adjust to. After about 2 weeks I came by one time and she just ran over to me, lifted her foot like she wanted to step up. I offered my arm and she jumped right up! Now, she regurgitates her head off for me and I am her object of affection! |

I too wanted to say welcome to the board. It's great that you have taken the time to get as much info as possible to take great care of your Macaw. I hope you have a Vet to take her to. This is very important as well as a good diet. from the pictures you provided, she looks great. Yes it is true it takes time to gain their trust. Don't rush it, it's always best to make baby steps.
Just some advise on getting her to step up. I was lucky, I have both my boys GW Macaw and SI Male Eclectus as babies but still, getting them to step up onto my hand or arm is not an east task. First, I would make a fist, do not let her get your fingers and everyday work on getting close to her. Beleive me, you will most likely get your first bite but try not to make a big deal of this or pull away. She will see this as a game. If she bites, press towards her and all parrots will let go as they are off balance. Just don't knock her over. Press easy towards the lower bottom of her belly right above her feet and ask her to step up. always use these words so she will learn what action you are asking from her. Once she does, be ready to reward her and make a big deal out of so the next time she does this, she will want to and not just because you want her to. You can even stick train her as well, but I think it's harder to get them to trust you having a stick come at you. Once you get her to step up, work with others in your family and pass her back and forth so she gets used to everyone and does not just bond with you. I hope this info helps. Keep us posted. Joe

She is gorgeous! Congrats! My B&G has bit pretty hard a couple of times, but only drew blood twice. Once he was angry at the dog and bit my finger, the other time he was just angry and bit the top of my foot. The other non-blood times were just hard pinches. I still have all of my limbs, and they are scar-free from him! lol! I was more intimidated by my hubby's amazon than Gordie. Smaller beaks break the skin much easier. Good luck! Oh, and welcome to the forum!
