New Severe Macaw...

I have been parrot shopping for a while, and have done a fair amount of research on different species. Yesterday, At the bird fair in Tampa- I made my final decision- I bought a just weaned Severe Macaw.

I was attracted to these birds for their looks- But also from what I had read about them- a lot of the charm of the larger Macaws, but a bit easier and less expensive to keep due to their smaller size. This one seems to have a great disposition, too- He was VERY friendly with people, even in the chaotic show environment. He was from a small time 'hobby' breeder, and it was evidenet that they had put some time into him. And, I think that the price was pretty good, too, $675 seemed reasonable.

Is there anything particular to this bird that I should watch out for?? He is already eating well, He eats pellets readily, fresh fruit and veggies, too. As he was just weaned, I was a little worried about that, but it hasn't been a problem. I will be keeping an eye on his weight, and he will be visiting the vet next week to make sure that everything is in good order. Anything else I need to know at this point?

Thanks...

You will find lots of information on this board, cause these are REAL bird lovers here. There are many with larger birds here, so it won't take them long to find this post I am sure.

Congrads on the new arrival!!! I take it Miro is his/her name?? Is that him in your aviator? Enjoy and feel free to post on your baby, wheter it be pictures or stories :)

Glad to hear your baby is eating well ~ is he playing yet?? I love watching babies learn to play it is sooo cute!!

How exciting for you! I looked into a Severe Macaw to add to my flock as well, the sound like charming birds. I've never actually interacted with one. Glad to hear you're taking him to a vet, that is an important first step.

He plays a little- Mostly wants to cuddle under your chin now. He was handled- a LOT- by the breeder, so he really loves human interaction... I am sure that playing is not far behind.

Congratulations and welcome to the board. We have a severe named Kashi and he is quite the guy. He lives with his best friend Mango a Caninde macaw. Kashi is a bit shy but a very good bird.

Welcome. Your baby is precious. I have a 5 year old Severe macaw (Chi Chi) and he's a real trip. He's high strung, fun, devoted to me, a total charmer and entertainer and has the most irritating screech of any bird here at **********. That's the ONE drawback to Severes. However, he's a friendly little cuss, loves to sing badly and dance and will happily step up on command. In fact, he can't do it quickly enough.

If I had to thin my flock, he'd be one of the very last to go. He's a special little guy and I'm nuts about him. Frankly, I'm a macaw person and like all of them. I have 5 other species, but the macaws are my favorites.

I hope your baby turns out to be one of the really good Severes. The good ones are priceless. The bad ones are, well worthless (LOL). Only teasing. I love the Severes. I think they are the best of the minis. You will be challenged to keep him stimulated because they are very, very smart. While potty training my Ekkie in another room, my Chi Chi trained himself. THAT'S PRETTY DARN SMART.

THE OUTLAW

Thanks...

Thanks for all the warm welcomes.

If his attitude at the start is any indication, this will be a great bird- It has shown no interest in biting/nipping anyone that holds it- It shows some signs of curiosity and mischief, for example it LOVES to take my glasses off... But, a firm NO and a puff of air, and he behaves again- for a little while anyway :)

He is also fairly quiet- 'Squawks' a bit, and sometimes screams a little when you leave him, but he stops after a few minutes...

He already has 'step up' figured out- He did that when he arrived- And is pretty good about it...

I realize this COULD all change, but I will hope not...

When we spoke, you sounded like you had done your research, and came into macaw ownership with your eyes open. You know about their intelligence, and need for socialization and attention. And with your friends here at BirdBoard you'll do well. Keep the photos coming, and make sure he has lots of toys.

This guy can eat... He attacks his pellets, and has eaten every type of fresh food that I have offered him so far- Seems to love grapes, though... He peels them in his beak, and eats the 'good' part out of the middle, and drops the skin...

He's off to the vet tomorrow, to make sure he is healthy...
