Your Fids:
A a result of the Hurricane Charley, I became the foster Mom to four refugees from Port Charlotte. These poor, skinny apprehensive little birds had been exposed to the elements for two days, drinking contaminated water, no food and dodging hawks and other predators. Lynda Lewis from FWCAS helped with the rescue along with Parrot Rescue of Ft. Myers. Lynda quarantined and tended to the needs of 20+ cockatiels and 5 lovebirds in her A/C garage. Donations of cages, toys and food poured in from all over! Then, Lynda lost her electric in the next hurricane. I picked up Charley, Cha-cha, Ruby and Ladybird as well as Buttercup and Caruso, who eventually went to friend.

All the tiels were underweight but eating and drinking normally. Charley was a particularly skinny fellow. I tried supplementing their seed/pellet mix with a seed mash, no luck. I tried fruity oatmeal, no luck. I tried various shapes and sizes of pasta and beans; forget it…. Finally, I baked muffins with seed mash, veggies, cornmeal, orange juice, eggs, etc. and everybody loved it! The base recipe for Birdiebread™ was born!

Today, the tiels are no longer skinny. Charley likes hot peppers so I devised Hot Pepper Birdiebread™ for him. Unfortunately, my female Lutino, Ruby, passed on within 20 mins one morning 6 months ago from "who knows what baggage she came with". I had cagemate, Ladybird, tested and she had a clean bill of health and my little flock has had no further health problems in 2 yrs. Psychological, is another story-this week, Charley celebrated a breakthrough and stepped up on a perch on command and allowed me to place him back in the cage. Hallelujah! Truly, it was a really BIG deal!
About Yourself:
As a single Mom and the sole support of 3 daughters , college grads and married and own their own homes in GA, DC and NJ. I recently became a Grandmother to 2 granddaughters and a grandson!

We always had birds either budgies or tiels, cats & a dog. I've been a Realtor in FL for over 25 yrs mainly in Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte counties buying and selling both residential and commercial properties for myself and others. This enabled me to have a flexible time schedule, most of the time, and provided a better income than I would have been able to earn in a regular 9-5 job in FL.

My mother also lived in Sarasota and for the last 5 yrs of her life had a debilitating disease called COPD from smoking (although she quit 12 yrs before she died). So I was part of the "sandwich generation" for awhile also. Now life had settled down a bit so naturally I can't stand it and have started 2 new businesses and adopted a 2 yr old rescue cat, a 2 yr old dog off death row, and, of course, my 3 tiels.

I'm on the board of Florida West Coast Avian Society www.fwcas.org . I'm have a website ( http://www.ginisbirdiebread.com ) for BIRDIEBREAD™ because I'm in 15 states and 4 foreign countries now! Amazing how much trouble you can get into after your kids go off on their own. Anything else you want to know-Google me, lol! Gini
