Thanks for answering my query about my baby Scarlet. Yes, we got her last Saturday. This is my first baby under 6 months old. Unfortunately, the other birds took umbrage at the sight of her, especially my bonded B&G. I had been wrestling with the idea of letting him go to a breeding situation because he is a very severe plucker and barber which evidenced after a year in our home. He's a re-home bird. He didn't like our female Military except for the brief meeting they had before we made the purchase...that was a mistake I guess. Sydney loved me to a fault though and wouldn't let anyone near me. He was like my male protector and rubbed his face against mine ever so sweetly. I knew he was in love. Not only did he talk and sing but he insisted on taking his evening meals with me firmly on my left arm very politely pecking into my plate, looking up and commenting when he deemed the offering more than palatable. But my vet told me that after spending over $2000 on treatments such as Haldol and previously a collar, nothing but a change in environment would alter his plucking and he suggested a local person here who has many such birds whom he pairs up. He is a well regarded person in the avian community though so I was told it wouldn't be that I was to send Sydney to a fate worse than fate but rather to return him to a state of raw Macaw-ness. After a volatile encounter with baby Scarlet yesterday, I called this person and made the arrangements which was supposed to happen 6 months ago to transition him to this Macaw world. I will be able to follow up on him. I didn't see my way out of this when the baby seemed to be so defenseless . I will write more as I recover from this painful loss of my very special friend, Sydney. I know I will never have another bird like hi, He actually rode on my bicycle handle bars and yelled out hello and goodbye to passers-byes! I'll write more later and send you some pics,

I am about to get my first Scarlet Macaw, a baby female on Saturday. Many people are telling me that I am making a terrible mistake...that a Scarlet is the bird from hell...very loud, demanding, screaming and most apt to pluck of all macaws. Now I am terrified of my encounter. Yet I see you and your birds. Any words of wisdom or re-assurance to conjure up for me in my moments of angst? Rosie

Hi, I am new to the Bird Board. I wish I had this about 2 years ago, when I had my 2 clutches, and never raised a tiel before. I now have 4 cockataiels and one grasskeet. I love this site, and feel so lucky to have so many people feel the way I do.
