Coco

Hello everyone. I am writing this because my beloved grey coco passed away about a month ago. She was 15 years old and after my vet performed a necropsy I was told it was from an enlarged heart. Honestly I believe that she died from a shot of Depro-prevera. Yes the same birth control medication they give humans. She has laid 6 eggs in a month and our normal vet told us she should have one. After the shot she began acting strange. I first contributed it to the shot but soon began to feel that something more was wrong. Since my normal vet was unavailable I took her to another avian specialist who told me that depro-prevera is rough on the avian system and that he would never recommend it to his clients. When coco passed the new vet (whom I took her to when mine was not available) said that he thought it was due to an enlarged heart although I suspect he didn't want to tell us it was the shot because we might think that we were responsible. Any ways I just wanted to share this with everyone and tell you that if your thinking about getting a depro shot for your bird make sure you understand the consequenses. ours was given because she had laid so many eggs and thought that it was best to stop the cycle rather than keep putting the strain on her.

If any one has any questions on this please feel free to write me,
Sam
