hi Dawn. I am sorry for your loss. It is very important no matter how long it takes to find out to the best of your ability with a necropsy what is wrong. I relize it takes time, but we have a high consentration of PDD and Beak and Feather in the state right now, and any bird that you come into contact with is at risk. You need to rule these things out for the health and safety of your remaining flock.
If you are conserned about the register, move the cage. however, I dont think that was it. Again, I cant stress this enough. Its VERY important to get this done.

what is PDD, do these things make them die sudden like that, and together? I don't know how long I can wait to have it done. I said wednesday, not realizing it was wed already, its either tomorrow or friday. I don't have the 2 parrotlets anymore, but I still have the lovebird. I will see about having it done and let you all know what is found out if anything.

This is so very strange that both of your plets died at the same time.
I am thinking about the heat register but it is still hard to believe it would cause death in BOTH birds at the same time unless they were so hot, but I see this was not the case. So I am just wondering. Were your plets able to find their water dish? Did you see them drinking in their new cage? Birds cannot live w/out water longer than 3 days. If they had no water at all, that would explain why they both died at the same time. Just a suggestion. I would however be v. interested and request a necropsy. I am very sorry you lost your plets. Fly free little ones.

If they were not drinking there water, it would have only been a day and half, I can say it is possible.
This is what 2 vets have told me now, its not worth doing a necropsy, cause the results can take 2 wks to come back and it can cost alot of money to have it done. They told me to see if there is a board certified person that can maybe do it in there office, but there is not :( I don't know what else to do. So far everyone else is ok. Hopefully was just the heat or water and nothing else.

Dear Hugs28, I am so sorry about the three birds that you have lost. If I was too quick to work on the problem and forgot to express my condolences about the birds, then I am indeed sorry. I hope you get some help with the problem, but mainly you should move the birds and their cages to a new location in the dining room -- even if only for a week or so. While we work on the situation, we need to get things eliminated. What is the temp in that room right by the register? And could you open it up (remove the register) and vacuum in there as much as you can to remove anything that might be a factor. Maybe even keep some of it in a bag if you need it later to be checked out. Just use soap and water to wash the wall, you might do that as well. The old hutch that you had in there was acting as a "receiver" of the air from the register; when you removed it, the full air was coming out. If the hutch is really too tall, then I would make or buy something that is all tall as you can stand to put the cages on. I realize that the HQ multiple cages had a stand, but it is really too small to ward off the airflow. You need to put something in the middle to really deflect the air. No matter what happens, this is what I can see as a potential problem in the future.

Thank you dancelady, I appreciate your help. I have to admit at first I was not too happy with your posts, but you have become helpul to me. I might see if I can take the stand off the cages and just put that on the hutch, I will talk to my husband.
The temp is in the mid 60's there right now, however the heat is not kicking on cause it is warmer outside and I have it turned down, but I can turn it up just to see what the temp is reading. I am sure I can take the register off and clean it out, and possibly even put in a new register, the on there is pretty old lol. The hutch is back in place in the dining room and the cages ontop it, til I get it all figured out. I might be leaning more toward the heat thing, only cause everyone else seems to be ok, no more deaths. If of course any more happen, I will have to figure more out. I realize that the hutch was blocking the air, that is why I am leaning toward that, cause it is blocking the air again. The other thing we were thinking about, is the possibility that during shipping of the cage, maybe something got dumped on it. All 4 corners were blown out of it, the box was pretty beaten up. There were no signs of that happening, however, can't rule it out, since it could have dried by the time I got it. I am going to take and clean it and then sanitize it with vinegar and peroxide over the weekend and see what happens. Providing I have not lost any more birds til then. thanks again

Dawn, let me tell you how very sorry I am that you are experiencing this. It must be quite frightening!
Quote:
Keep in mind that ALL birds have sensitive respiratory tracts and perhaps the smaller birds are all that more vulnerable. Things to consider that my be hazardous to the health of your pets: *housepainting (inside or out) *carpet cleaning or carpet replacing *air fresheners (plug-ins, candles, sprays, those solid things that you sit on a shelf, etc.) *fumes from Teflon or other non-stick cookware *fumes from a self-cleaning cycle *fumes from crafts (paints, hot glue guns, etc.) I don't know what to tell you, chica. In the unfortunate event that another bird passes, PLEASE refrigerate (DO NOT FREEZE) that bird immediately and contact a board-certified avian vet ( certification, species, credentialing, veterinary clinical practice, vet, abvp) ASAP to arrange for a necropsy. I'm not just worried about your birds at this point but you and your family as well. Please keep us updated, -e-
