Oh dear, what a terrible thing to happen! And your favorite dog and great chickens! I am so sorry and so devastated for you... there is no way to imagine why he did it. I guess even with a "degree" something bad can happen -- so sorry!!!! HUGS to you...

No I do not yet. I'm terrified of him to go somewhere bad.

He was finally graduated to outside freedom 24/7 (was in house for winter, crated while we worked) moved to outdoor kennel with Ringo (another heeler) in spring. now outdoors 24/7 but free while we are home. Was great and stayed around and was promoted to loose 24/7 (we live in the country) with the hope he would keep raccoons and strays away from the fids. All my breeders moved outside a week ago for the summer. They thrive outside and we share the patio with them in a nice set up that actually gives them more stimulation and we enjoy them more then the birdroom cause we spend allot of time out there. The Congo pair share the building with the hens although separated from the hens and the hens are only inside at night when I can lock everybody up. I have my other dogs but Cisco gaurds the inside and NO ONE will come in. He is the Chief of staff - he stays in. The two Jacks can never be trusted to stick around or not eat birdies so they are treated as such. Ringo is too young and far from ready to be trusted to stay around and he likes to drag everything in the world out to destroy. But Ponch has passed every test for two years....and has been out with them for a month.....until now

Oh huntress, I'm so sorry. It really does break your heart when a loyal animal betrays your well earned trust and does such a thing. I'm sorry for the loss of your chickens, and the loss of trust. It is not in a heeler's nature to kill what it looks after. If my heeler ever did that I don't know what I would do! When one of my huskies killed a chicken, I didn't think it would happen again but two or three more were killed. You can't trust them again. On the other hand, I always say anything is possible. I hope you find the right solution, and aren't too upset.
