My cockatiel passed away on Monday 5th

Merry our cockatiel passed away on Monday and I have to say it was a real shock how he went so quickly. Pippin our female cockatiel is quite a timid bird and can get quite panicky about things so when my partner was taking some decorations down Pippin flapped about and landed on Merry's head while he was drinking and unfortunatley dunking his head in the water. Merry then landed on the bottom of the cage and went into either shock or panick because he could'nt seem to breathe because his chest was faster than it was usually and his beak was open. My partner is unsure of birds and has no experiance with them he rushed to get me and was in a bit of a state himself as he did'nt know what to do. Together we tried to get Merry to calm himself down as we are first time owners and we don't really know what to do when a bird goes into shock and all the books we own about cockatiels dont really say anything about this. I am finding it hard at the moment to get over the fact Merry is no longer with us he was still only young and was'nt even a year old. My partner buried him with his favourite toy in the woods near us so we can remember him when we walk down that way. I will miss him nibbling my glasses and my hair the most and the way he used to look at me when he wanted me to come and see him. I have a lovely video of him which I will treasure forever now as it showed how lovely he really was. If anyone can relate to what happened here please do share your experience with me because I just dont know what we could have done to save him.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Tiels do startle easily, but it sounds like something more was going on -- I would venture a guess that there was not really anything with such a rapid decline. We would love to see your video.

Fly free, little Merry

do you know what that could be do you mean his health or the fact that Pippin doesnt seem worried he gone because she has changed she is singing and seems so much more happier which is strange. I bought them from avian breeder and they were from the same batch of eggs so when I bought I though they would be close but I'm not so sure? They did bicker alot over food and treats for example. Thank you for your kinds word about Merry he will be greatly missed and at some point I will put the video of him on here.

I am so sorry for your loss. January 5th was a bad day for me a year ago. I lost three. I understand your pain. I can only tell you not to blame yourself and that it does eventually get a little better. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Deepest sympathies.
