I need some help explaining...

Hello everyone!

I had a weird experience with a bird yesterday and I am really upset about what happened. Was hoping someone might give me some advice.

I live in Hawaii out in the boonies. And last night about 6pm, a parrot of some kind fly to my screen window and wouldn't go away, and was having trouble keeping in the air. Mainly he could just fly slowly to the ground.

After a bit of the guy hopping from screen to screen window, I finally caught him and brought him inside. Where he drank a bunch of water, and then proceeded to pass out on the monitor screens. He would wake up and explore everything then find himself back on the monitors to pass out.

He looked very health. A few feathers tattered here and ther ebut not much. I fed him some carrots and peas which he ate almost all of them and at about midnight I made a temporary cage out of a laundry basket and stuffed some sticks in there for him to perch.

At around 4 am, he died. Looking up, half alseep.

Now, in Hawaii, where does a tame parrot come from? I have no idea! A neighbor? We have.... few neighbors.

But he found me, and I don't know if he was tame but he wasn't afraid of me at all, and didn't bite.

Did I somehow kill him? If I would have left him outside, mongoose would have gotten him since he couldn't really fly well. And he found me.

Can someone help? I feel like the house of death and I am so sad cause I was so hoping for a friend.

Thanks all.
~Leslie

Oh, you kindhearted person Leslie,

Peas and carrots and water would not have killed him. My guess is he was a tame parrot that got lost. He may have already tried to get into a home and hit a window. He could have had internal injuries that there is no way you would have know about!

Look at it this way, in his last hours he found you to pass away in the presence of love and safety. Don't think of yourself as a house of death, but a house of sanctuary. Somehow you were chosen because you would do the best job. As painful as it is for you.

It sounds like you fell in love with the parrot, maybe it is a sign you should get your own one day. This is definitely the place to do all your research to find out what kind you may want, the costs, and the proper care...... just a thought.

You did nothing wrong. I would have done the same thing. Who knows how long the pet parrot had been out on its own. I think a window is a very likely culprit. They can hit their heads so hard on glass.

What you did was wonderful. You sheltered him when he needed it most. I'm sure his passing was easier in your care then outside with preditors.

Wow guys! I can't believe the responses so quickly.

I don't know if be honked his head to hard, but he was perfectly fine all night.

Just bugs me. I love birds. And I really appreciate all the kindness you put out.

Just feel so bad, I think I might convince my roommate to go get us a friend.
Fish are awesome, but not as cuddly or nice.

But yeah, least he got to eat alot and get a good sleep and poop all over my monitor before he went out.

Just bad luck. Guess he just wanted to die in a comfy place vs outside int he cold. Hey, he got it.

Thanks all! I will see if I get a friend soon.

Just doesn't make any sense....

Do not feel bad, that was a lovely thing that you did for him.
In the end I am sure the comfort and care you offered made it a lot easier for him to pass peacefully. He found you for a reason.

Maybe try to post somewhere locally to see if someone is missing their parrot, that way you can atleast inform them of what happened and provide them with some closure.

Oh you were so very sweet to take him in, care for him and give him a temporary bed to lay his weary head. He found love in his last moments and that is such a wonderful gift.

Do not think of this in any ill manner, you and he were both blessed.

I agree completely. You did nothing wrong and let him feel safe and loved in his final hours. He may have been looking for a place where he could find peace. Fly free, little stranger!
