It does not seem that the lifespan of the budgie is adequate for how much personality and intelligence they posess. Lilly was my first rescue budgie, not because she was mistreated, but because the owner made a tough choice and decided she needed a home that could spend more time with her. After Lilly, I was bitten by the budgie bug, and now have 16. But Lilly stood out. When the group was only 4 strong, she taught them how to squeeze through the bars of the cage for playtime. They followed her. She taught them to eat veggies. Lilly always ate her vegetables. She recently befriended a lovely male, Lucky, that we rescued abandoned with no food or water. His friend had already passed, and looked just like Lilly. She was friendly, and sat on your finger or shoulder. She was in my opinion my loveliest bird. I knew she was old, and in the last couple months had a few seizure like spells. We brought her upstairs and kept her quiet, and I was afraid she'd pass. But she was a strong one, and perservered. She was found this morning, forever sleeping with Lucky looking very sad. Upon removing her band, she was 10 years old.
