RIP Henbane :(

Mum forgot to shut the chickens and duck in their coop last night. She woke up to screaming and ran outside to our rooster, Bazil, at the front door (who had flown up the balcony to hide there) and feathers on the ground. A fox had taken Henbane. I wish I could be angry at mum for forgetting, and at my sister for saying "Mum's gonna get me a new chicken." but the anger would be misplaced. It's that fox I hate so much. Our chickens are very special because we raised them from eggs and they have been through a lot with us. In 2007, Henbane was the first one out of the egg and the most beautiful creamy colour. She hatched at around 2am in the morning and I was out there all night making sure everyone hatched safely. She was always one of the friendliest chickens, guarded the coop from wild birds and was the mother hen of the group. She was so happy yesterday having dustbaths in the sun...

Now our little chicken family is broken.

RIP Henbane you will be missed my everyone, feathered and otherwise.

I'm deeply sorry. I know what its like to loose a chicken, I've lost 4. People may always say, its just a chicken. But I swear to you, my Ginger beans acts just like a parrot. She gets jealous when I'm holding another chicken, and she always runs into my arms to get a hug. Romeo, my rooster, that brave little silky man, died last november to a coon or fox. My dad heard him making goose-like noises. He put him into the coop and shut the bottom door, but poor silkies can't fly. I was so angry at my dad, I didn't talk to him for 2 days. Now we always lock ours up at night. :D Its always good to have a rooster. They "usually" sound the alarm when predators prowl.
