OK, two days ago it was Hill's Science Diet and today it is Purina and others!
Make sure you know who manufactures your Pet Food ie Fancy Feast is manufactured by Purina which is owned by Nestles company. Here is the link to the lastest Reuters: Pet deaths expected to rise despite recall: FDA http://www.reuters.com/article/domes...29324120070319 It appears to me these large corporations are concerned about their stockholders and doing testing to make sure it is their product before releasing the names! Now, I am worried about my cats since I feed them both Purina and Wellness! Guess I'm going to be home cookin' for them as well as Annie for awhile.

OK, on the noon ABC news, the anchor added the word "chow" to the foods of 37 more brands that were added to the list! This is going to get nasty because the Dry Dog Food is a $190M industry. I pulled my cat's kibble this am when I heard Purina. Not on the list is Del Monte (Meow Mix), Bumblebee (Figaro) and Master's. I'm going to wait a few days before buying anything else and do an Aloe Detox and feed my furrbabies Mom's Chicken/Fish and Brown Rice until more info comes in. Also, 7 out of 48 animals have died in a study that has been conducted since Feb 20. Scary! Surely they could have tested to toxins without using the animals!!!

I was just in Dogster.com and thought I would share this info. There were 17 pages of posts in this thread. I just copied 2 posts :
http://www.dogster.com/forums/Food_a...read/391098/17 Post #1 HI everybody. Sorry it took a couple of days to write. Cujo became very ill yesterday and I was at the vet hospital all afternoon/evening. They have been inundated with clients wanting blood and urine work. It was so sad. Well just to fill you guys in on what's going on (and thank you for all your PM's - it was very touching!) I had stopped Eukanuba puches and set appointment for blood work. I started Cujo on Natural diet with cookied chicken, veggies, etc but he still was not feeling well. My dog walker called me at work later in the day yesterday and said Cujo was in bad shape so I got in touch with the vet and he scared the POOP out of me that I ran home and rushed Cujo to the hpspital. The vet said "Bring him in NOW". I told him I was at work and could make it bac k to CT in an hour he said "NOW". Then said "Listen Theresa, honestly we do not know what is going on. We don't even know what to test for. We are trying to find out from thes companies what the issue is and to be frank most of our clients eat the same brands as Cujo and their food was also found to be in the same lots as Cujo. I want you to stop feeding him the food." I toild him I did and only left some dry out. He told me to "STOP THE DRY AS WELL." And indicated that no one knows what the situiation is and better to be safe - needless to say Eukanuba dry is also in the garbage. He scared me so bad that I was crying the whole train ride back to CT from NYC. I get to the vet and he told me that they would do testing but recommended that I bring him in again for 6 month check up depdnding if results came clear as he had already consumed so much of the food. Hours later I finally get to bring him home and the good news was that the kidney numbers looked ok and the vet said he didnt feel that Cujo showed adverse affects from food but needed to be retested in a few months to be sure. The bad news was that the outcome has been really bad vomiting and diarreah (usually in the beginning) and they gave him shots. He is now on two medications for two weeks and on Prescription diet food. At first I was anti- this, but the vet said that the reason this requires presc is because it is actual rice/corn /chicken mixture and not good for long periods of time because it is not neccessarily processed (did you guys ever hear that? Also Hills makes it too but apparently not the same type of food like reg dog food?). He makes me mix one of his supplment tablets in it so he gets nutrients. I did tell vet I would never go back to commercial processed food after this eperience and esp how vounerable we all are, including them, not knowing what is going on. The vet actually tells me that I should not take him off and was anti a natural diet. I found that odd. But I am not changing my mind. I will slowly introduce it to him as I wean him off ID food. Cujo's appetite is doing better , he ate a little bit of food. He stopped vomitting but he lost 2 lbs. He still drinks excessivly and urinates like crazy. I need to watch that too. He started playing more again ... and not to sound too TMI... but his poop is finally normal after DAYS. Anyway... sorry for thelong email but wanted to telet you know. Also for those that are worried - I think its a good idea to get testing just to be sure if you can. For sanity reasons. I cant tell you how relieved I was that they felt he was OK minus the higher white cell count. It made me SLEEP after two days of not worrying sick that I hurt him. Again, I thought that because I am only human and love him so much. I know now that it is not my fault andfrom now on if he is trying to tell me omething I know to listen to him! Thanks for all your support. -Theresa & Cujo Post #2 I posted this in Dog health but i thought i would post it here too Our vets told us to call the FDA to report Angel's death. We think the cause of death now was the food. She had been eating it for 5 months and started getting a little better when we started her on antibiotics and iv's. When she ate the food again it is when she got worse. it was horrible. The seizures are now believed to have been convulsions. When i talked to the lady today she said they were taking it very serious and have had reports of over 1000 deaths related to the food. She said that Angel had all the symtoms that the other owners said their pets had. She said Angel's weight and age could have played part in her rapid decline. She also said the 10 that they reported were lab animals. It was 10 out of 60 animals, that is 20%, scary. They knew back as far as December. If your dog is sick or has died you need to call the FDA i am going to list their numbers for everyone. For those of you who feed Nutro or are looking for a dry food that doesn't contain wheat gluten, this is the lastest info from their website:
Nutro Dry Pet Foods Do Not Contain The Ingredient Wheat Gluten The FDA and Menu Foods Tie Wheat Gluten to the Menu Foods Recall City of Industry, Calif. (March 30, 2007)– As the Food and Drug Administration today reiterated that it has no intention at this time of expanding the Menu Foods recall to include dry food, Nutro Products wants consumers to know: Nutro's dry pet foods do NOT contain wheat gluten. Nutro's dry pet foods do NOT contain imported grains. Nutro's dry pet foods are NOT produced by Menu Foods. NONE of Nutro's dry pet foods are subject to the Menu Foods recall. Pet owners should feel safe and confident feeding Nutro dry pet foods to their pets. “Even prior to this extremely disturbing incident at Menu Foods, our dry dog and cat foods were not produced using wheat gluten,” said Dave Kravis President and CEO of Nutro Products. “We know that there is confusion among consumers about what foods are safe to feed their pets right now. We can categorically say that Nutro's dry pet foods do not contain the ingredient wheat gluten or any imported grains, they are unaffected by the Menu Foods recall, and it is absolutely safe to continue feeding these products to your pets.” According to Kim Noetzel, vice president of marketing and community relations for the Arizona Humane Society: "We are reassuring pet owners that based on the information we have, dry food products, including those from Nutro, are safe to continue feeding. We are in contact with Nutro and have complete confidence in their products and in the information and resources they have been providing us. We will absolutely continue working with them throughout this situation." Nutro's products are 100% guaranteed and all returned product will be refunded. Nutro customers may check Nutro's website (www.nutroproducts.com) or contact Nutro's Consumer Hotline (800) 833-5330 for further information about its products. Nutro's website will be updated as more information becomes available. Additionally, general information about Menu Foods' recall is available at www.menufoods.com/recall/ |

It appears that there are several issues being looked at with regard to both wet and dry food-the FDA, the vets and the pet food companies don't know what the problem (s) really are and are jumping on whatever they can to deflect blame from their product. I don't trust any of them and certainly not any PR that they put out on their website. I'm back from visiting my children and my dog is off Solid Gold and back on Mom's cooking. My cats are still on solid gold kibble and I'm still trying out different food combos for them. Everyone has to make their own decisions on what to do with their pets. Solid Gold and Natural Balance are two I am confident are not part of this fiasco but until they resolve it to MY satisfaction, better safe than sorry!

I just found out that the dog biscuits I am feeding my dog are part of the recall. Shouldn't the stores have signs up telling you that this part of the recall??? Or at least remove the product from their shelves??? Luckily she hasn't had to many, but I am going to stop feeding them to her.
