I have Leopard Geckos, Crested Geckos and Bearded Dragons.
For a first time lizard keeper, I'd recommend all of these above. Leopard Geckos stay small, diet consists of crickets and mealworms, needs a hot side of the cage around 85-88 degrees F and are easy to handle, fun to watch and can be social to an extent. Crested Geckos also stay small, they tolerate handling very well, diet consists of Repashy's Crested Gecko diet which is a powder based food and can be kept at room temperature (65-75, anything over 80 could be deadly). They are by far the easiest and cutest in my opinion. Bearded Dragons are a little more complex but are VERY worth it. They are more social than geckos, they each have their own personalities, males will Bob their head at other dragons and females will wave their arms slowly in reply. They seem to enjoy human contact and are VERY tolerant of handling. They need UV lighting, a warm side about 85F with a basking spot of about 100-110F. Their diet consists of Crickets, meal worms, Silk worms, and feeder roaches along with a daily salad (Collard Greens, Dandelion Greens, Endive, Escarole, kale, Spaghetti squash, Green Peas, carrot, parsnips, NO LETTUCE) I wouldn't give them up for the world.

I love the snakes! I wish I could buy some for my friend (who loves them more than I do). They are so beautiful. I saw some beardeds in the pet shop today, and they ran up to the glass to see me (looking for a feed I'm guessing ;)

The third picture of the one on the rock/brick (sorry, I know nothing about lizards) is absolutely adorable. What is he/she? I, also, like the last pic of the yellow one. It looks like he/she is smiling.

Snakes are ideal animals (Few complex species aside). Super easy to care for beside Crested Geckos. I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world.

Crested geckos may now be on my list of wants for when I have a larger house. I'm going to have to do a bunch of research now. Hmmmm, wonder what hubby will say. lol
I have a question. Forgive me if it's completely stupid. I was told that having a lizard and birds isn't safe because lizards have salmonella on their skin. Is that true? Like I said, I know nothing about lizards. My cousins had iguanas when they were little. Holding them when I was at my aunt's house is my only history with lizards aside from almost stepping on a snake once. My neighbor and I spent a couple hours in a tree house screaming until my mom heard us. She had to save us. lol
