My unique first aid skills!
Well me and Flea went on our usual early Sunday afternoon bike ride to the markets- a good hour and a half trip there and back. Not in my 10 years of attending the markets have I ever been told by a security guard that my dog wasn't allowed. Perhaps this was an omen of what was to come!
On our way home we stopped to get a drink from a tap. It was then I saw Flea licking at his paw and I had a look at it. His pad was firetruck red with blood I have never seen blood so bright (except in that Sweeney Todd movie!) I kept calm and thought quickly... we are a few kilometers from home... how am I supposed to stop the bleeding? He needed that paw bandaged up...... I take off my sock. ![]() So I patched up my dog's split-open, heavily bleeding paw; using a sock, a hair tie and a leash! How's that for first aid skills!? ![]() Backtracking along the path, I saw little 20 cent- sized patches of blood every meter where Flea had stepped, while running beside me. How long had he been bleeding for!? He kept a brisk walking pace all the way home and when I inspected the wound, it had STOPPED BLEEDING! I am a MIRACLE WORKER! (I think we were just lucky) I cleaned the pad with white vinegar and salt (only non toxic antiseptics I could think of). Then I found out we had no bandages at home. So I ended up using cotton pads, cotton gauge tied around it and taped this all together with three band aids. Then a fresh (stripy pink) sock was put on and taped up with red duct tape! He looks HILARIOUS! Oh and I gave him a biscuit for being such a brave little toaster
