Question Couldn't believe what I found this morning!

I leave for work earlier than usual this morning and come to find a beautiful golden lab running around my front yard. He had no collar or anything, so I figured he had been on the run for a while. At first I thought he looked like Buster, my neighbors dog. So I rang their doorbell at 7:30 on a Sunday morning. Thats when Buster jumped up in the window. I guess he wasn't theirs. I felt bad for waking them up. So he is still running loose and I get in my car to leave and I am driving down the street and he is running right next to my car following me. So I am clueless. I get to the stop sign and let him the the Jeep. He hops in and sits right down like thats where he was meant to be. So I say okay....He is going to need food and water! I drive him to walmart, get a lease, collar, dishes and dog food. Run him back to my house which luckily has a fenced in back yard. I get him all set up back there and he was really thirsty. Of course I had to leave for work and here I sit. I hope he is still there at noon. He seems like such a nice dog and I would love to take care of him for as long as he lives...but it costs money that I dont have. I would surely skip a few meals to pay for his food anyday. I hope the rightfull owner can be found, but if not I will be happy to have a new friend. Craziness!

That's very kind of you!

I hope the owners come to collect him or I hope that you'll be happy with your new friend, either way I'm sure he is in good hands in the meanwhile!

Sometimes they just find their own good home. If no collar or microchip and no one looking...he found his new home!

See how many commands he knows- if there are quite a few then he may have a loving home that misses him. If he followed you, he sounds friendly and well socialized anyway. Try as many recources as you can to find his owners before thinking of keeping him. Shame he didn't have a collar. Also check him for ticks, mites, mange, fleas and worms and also malnutrition if he's been missing for a while. I might also mention rabies since you're in the US (we don't have that here!) If you have the money, a trip to the vets would be a good idea. Don't let him loose again whatever you do... I had a ferret than ran away once and a lady found her then let her go and I never saw my ferret again. I hope it turns out well! Keep us posted and if you have any Qs pm me :)

A trip to the vet to check for a microchip wouldn't hurt, is he still with you?

If you do not find the owners, need a vet and you live here in the States:
There are a lot of mobile vet clinics or sometimes Non-Profit animal places that give discounts on vaccinations (at times free rabies shots) and low cost heartworm test and heartworm preventative. Here in Texas we have to have our dogs (at least) on heartworm preventative because of the mosquito population.

Good luck!

Just type in Discount Vaccinations for dogs in your area and it will come up with a bunch of stuff. Low cost to free neutering etc....Try that and see what comes up. I know that our local SPCA has low cost vet care.
