Cockatiel
Hi,
My cousin is stuck in a wheelchair and for chrissie this year i am hand-rearing a cockatiel for him. He absolutely adores birds and our IRN loved him when he visited. While the IRN was a little large for my cousin a cockatiel is an ideal size. Birds are definately a possibility if you already own them. Krystal |

actually I would recommend against a bunny unless someone is willing to change their poop tray daily because if it is built up for more then a day it is toxic to humans and if its toxic for us it is doubly toxic for them...... so keep that in mind for any animal you bring in

Also as a further note birds are far more relaxing to a child that is developmentally disabled or has other disabilities that provide challenges for them to overcome. I myself have CP and My uncle and Dad do too and we all felt more companiable towards birds than anything other than a lhasa apso which are the best bedroom defenders on the planet

Jackie where are you? I have a tiel that got nesting material on his leg, got vetted and has had his toes amputated. if you were close enough i would consider you? He was # 6 the runt, would have died if i hadnt stepped, he had such a fight for life........ I gave him the name JJ. he is a pied tiel, still small but 5 months now.

I have a hearing disability-single sided deafness..I can relate that as a child I felt more compassion & desire to help a pet that had a disability. I thought here's something that I had an understanding of what its going through. To this day, I will in a heartbeat take in a animal that is not "normal" just because they might get left out!! Animals that have disabilities dont realize they do like we do. It might help your grandson think if this bird ..etc can still do things and have fun..so can I!! Good Luck!

disabled nephew
sorry i am so late to reply to this. haven't been a member for long. my nephew has severe arthrogryposis which confines him to a wheelchair. my daughter intrduced him to her LAME ring neck and they got along fantastic. his mum then bought him a hand reared tiel but the relationship just hasn't worked. hmmmm, i don't know if there is something to that or not but worth a go.
