Special Abled Parrots

I'm glad to see this forum up and running.
I asked if we could get a spot, where we could post questions and concerns with our special abled birds. I know there have been some posts in regards to special abled birds I did catch, usually late, because I am not able to look though all the posts in every forum. Because I have had several birds with disabilities, my name has popped up when others respond to the post. I would feel horrible if I did not see it, and did not respond. So here is the perfect spot I can scan every night to see if I can help in any way.


My very first special abled bird I purchased from a pet store. She was a white faced tiel back in 1990ish. She was a nekkid baby when the pet store got her, and when I placed my deposit on her. As she started to grow, we noticed her feet and legs were deformed. The store said I could have my money back, and they would send her back to the breeder, and get a replacement for her. I was already attached to her, and had named her "cricket" for the tiny little chirps she made while I would hold her as a baby, and ironically through out her entire life.
Out of curiosity, I asked what the breeder would do with her if she was returned, and the pet store said she would be put down.
There was no way in the WORLD I was going to let that happen.
That special abled little girl stole my heart from the day I met her, and I was going to make her life as comfy as I could.
"Cricket" spent many years with me. Longer then we thought because of her disability, and not knowing if everything inside her formed correctly too.
She passed on near the age of 11.
Because of the news of what the pet store admitted the breeder would do, I have spent my years then, living with and placing other handicapped babies in loving homes.

Now, not all Breeders do this, so I don’t want anyone to get the wrong impression. Many of them are very compassionate, and go to great lengths to find the perfect home for their imperfect baby.

Special abled birds result for many different reasons.
Accidents, sickness, problems in the egg and old age.
I've had em all, and loved each one very much.

While the love between a bird and human is what brings us all to Bird Board, the love and trust from one who is less fortunate through no fault of their own, is priceless, and is hard to explain.

Miss Emma has her own story to share...but that will be in another post.
I can tell you that Emma is the only egg to survive out of 5, and that was combined from 2 clutches. As a just laid egg, she was pulled and placed into an incubator, after the parronts has cracked all the prior eggs they had.
We theorize that her egg was not turned as often as her daddy would have turned her in the nest, and thus resulting to her head sticking to the shell inside the egg.

Does Emma know she is different? Probably. She knows she is spoiled. She knows she is loved and protected. She knows how much her mom and daddy love her....Would I trade her for 100 normal greys..NEVER! She is my heart.



The pillow she is on was a mothers day present from her and George.
