Orange Wings

This is the story of an Orange Wing Amazon of the name of Sarge. Sarge has never been sexed and is 7-8 years old.
We recently met Sarge and he was such a sweet heart, he stepped up and did his little Amazon growl when we tried to pet him but he never bit. Sarge loved his peanuts more than he loved the company but he did peak at us from inside his cage.
I fell in love with Sarge the minute I met him and heard his story and now you will get to hear it too.

Sarge was bought only because he was an Amazon and not because someone wanted him as a pet. He was kept in a small Parakeet cage with no toys, only his sunflower seeds to keep him company. He was always covered and never spoken to, that is why Sarge doesn't speak very much or very well. One day, Sarge was attacked by the family dog, his wing was shattered and he was left to die. The dog made a second attempt to kill him and almost did, until his owner came home and put him back into the tiny Parakeet cage.
Sarge received no medical attention after the bite, but the sister of the owner, who has extensive experience with birds visited the house one day and what she saw shocked her. Sarge was covered head to toe in crusted blood, he was missing 2 nails and the bones were clearly broken, Sarge was dying.
She paid her brother his price and took him home where she nursed him back to health and gave him a big cage with a lot of toys and good food. One of Sarge's nails grew back, but he's still missing one, and it doesnt matter if Sarge is flighted or not, he will never fly again. He cant even lift or flap his wings. Sarge is also a plucker, he plucks his chest and legs. He's a chef though, he likes to put all of his food in his water bowl and make soup.
He will be coming home soon, in a few weeks hopefully and we will try very hard to give him the best life he could possibly have, hopefully that's a long one.

Poor baby. How could he just leave him covered in blood? That's sick. Thank you so much for taking Sarge, he will be very loved!

Sadly, that sounds quite similar to the OW I know named "Mouth".... given of course a few tweaks here n there to the story...

I'm sure you'll do well with Sarge, and will hopefully turn his life around for the better!

Orange wings are my favorite of Amazons. Probably because I has such a good relationship with one. You can read Polly's story in the memorial section.
Thank you for taking him, and for sharing his story.
You will fall in love real quick with him, they are the Sweetest of the Amazons, and I can tell you, I really feel as if I am missing something in life, because I dont share my life with one.

CONGRATS!!!! and thank you!

Sarge's story made me cry. I can't stand it, people are just amazing...why have an animal if you are not going to take care of it? Anyway, I am so happy for Sarge and for you! I love Amazons, they are so smart and full of love.

About 6 weeks ago we got a 6 year old moulacaan Cockatoo, I don't know her story to the extent that you know Sarges, she has no wings to speak of and was plucked to bleeding. She is the sweetest thing in the world and it breaks my heart everyday to think of why she is in this shape. It looks like it's going to be a long haul to get her to stop plucking ( just after 6 weeks, though she has feathers popping out all over!!, we are using a cone and some herbal drops and a spray to deter/with aloe vera) Bringing her into our home has been the best deicsion we have made in a long time...

Good luck to you! Keep us updated and post some pictures!

Sadly, I've heard far worse stories. It's sickening. There is no creature on Earth more cruel than a human being.

I'm certain Sarge will become a great pet. I have a Yellow Nape zon that is a joy. The orange wings are especially lovely zons. Good luck.

Wow! It sounds like Sarge was just waiting ofr you to find him and take him to a good parront home. I have 2 CAGs and a BH PI. We have a Orange Wing Amazon next door and it was just given to this girl who knew nothing about parrots!!

I tried gently trying to intervien with Bird talk magazines and asking to take Purdy out to play along with Sammy. Then I was offered a key to her apartment. I would find dirty water or no water and her food dish with just hulls left in it. I would take purdy for overnights here just so she could get a regular parrots sleep schedule. I would find that Purdy would be covered in the middle of the day in the dead of summer with all the windows closed.

I ask to purchase her from this young girl several times. Well, somehow things have changed for purdy and I see that she is being taken out daily and I hear her in the morning. I am sure things are not perfect for her as my neighbor suffers from depression. I am just so glad that Purdy has the life of a parrot and is not on a party persons schedule as before. No more loud screaming! so distressing and just made me want to cry.

Purdy helped me to teach my CAG to enjoy water and Orange Wings are great. I am sure things will get better for you and sarge. Purdy was not ignored or injured to that extent but some love nutrition and some good sleeping conditions can do wonders!

I am hoping to be able to birdie sit maybe again this summer? I now have 2 more to my flock bnut Purdy is always welcome!

Good Luck with Sarge! I am sure we all are going to be happy to hear about how things are progressing with him
