Sponge hobble, splayed legs

Hi, can anyone help, i have a 3wk old love bird, whose legs were splayed backwards, I have made a sponge hoddle with a make up sponge , iThe baby can waddle about with this , before itīs life was on it's stomach . My questions are...
1.. how thick should the sponge be? 2.. how far apart should the holes be? 3..Is any way of making a good hole in the make up sponge?
