My 4 month old Parrotlet female and my JRT

Hi,

For some reason Pipsqueak, my Parrotlet wants to jump onto my JRT w/ the scruffy fur, not my other two dogs. I think something between Peanut and Pipsqueak is going on when I'm not home (stereo buttons have changed under Pipsqueaks cage...signs of Peanut getting close to the cage). So, w/ supervision I'm able to have Pip out and let her get close to Peanut, but the JRT does get nervous and all it would take is one fast mistake. I guess my question is does anybody have dog/bird interaction experience? Any advise, warnings or training out there? Pip bites me....sort of testing me...but is getting better about it each time she comes out of her cage.

thanks,

Hello, I have 18 parrots and have always had a dog. I was stationed overseas and brought back 2 JRTs from Scotland. A Jackie is, first and foremost, a hunting dog. I wouldn't allow any interaction between the dog and Pipsqueak if I were you. My Jackies had the tendency to be jealous, too, of anybody or anything that had my attention. If the dog is jumping at or on the cage when you're gone, then the bird is being stressed, too. This will shorten the bird's lifespan and can also lead to plucking, etc. You should most definitely put the cage out of the canine's reach, preferably in a different room, when you're gone.

My female Jackie tolerated my parrots and I could have them out together under supervision. My Jackie was, however, 12 years old when I got my first parrot. A young Jackie though... ...no way! When mine were youngsters they'd bring in baby birds in the springtime as a "kill trophy." (The male didn't live past 10 years and I didn't have any companion parrots while he was alive. I lost him to liver disease.)

Please put Pipsqueak in a different room when you're gone. Please.

Cheers, Cindi.

I have to agree with Cindi. Please do not allow your dog and your bird to interact. One nick/nip from the dog can kill the bird because of the toxicity of dog/cat saliva (carries deadly bacteria). If such an event does occur, or even if there are no outward signs but you suspect something happened, you need to rush your bird to the vet and demand antibiotics. There is about a 2 hour window to give the bird a 50-50 chance. Otherwise, it will die. I know because it happened to me.

YES, do prevent all possiblities of dog or cat injury to your birds. My Hahn's girl was bitten by one of my dogs on the wing. The infection was so fast it was unbelievable, fortunately my sweet husband got her to an excellent avian vet in Dallas and she survived but it took hundreds of $$ and many weeks of recovery and prayers.

i also agree about keeping the dog away from Pip,i am minding a six month old jack russel for my sister at the moment and i wouldnt trust him for a second, anytime he see's the birds or rabbits or degus his eyes eyes go wide and he is so focused on them that i know he would attack if he got even the smallest chance.
