parrotlet escape

I came home today to a free little parrotlet. He was on top of his cage looking so proud and happy. One of the doors on his flight cage was open? They are the slide up type, usually they shut on there own but it was slightly slanted and it stayed open somehow. The cage has 2 openings in front which I feed and water through and the one on the side which I dont use and this was the one that was open. Also its only me and my husband( no chlidren) so I'm confident he opened the door on his own. I know this happens often with larger parrots but this little parrotlet opened what feels to me like it would be to heavy for him. Has this ever happened to anyone?

It happened to me too! Good thing I didn't step on him. Now I twist tie all those doors shut - I'm looking for some better way, but at least I know he's where I left him - lol.

you know those hangy things that twist shut in a ring that bird toys hang from? I put them on the doors that slide up. they give just enough weight that my guy can't open his doors and if i put them at the top of the doors they dont interfere when i want to open them. They do make him mad and he tugs on them every morning, but so far, no escapes since i started using them.

In Tommaso's old cage, I had the same kind of slide up doors. I was actually home when Tommaso lifted the door and got out. I had to put spring clips on the doors. He now has a different cage that has latches on the outside. Parrotlets are smart little fids.

They are smart little things. Size makes no difference to a Houdini!
Doors I don't use, I zip tie. Doors I do use get a clamp that has the same spring action as a clothes pin. Got it from the Hardware store, and even the macaws can't open their beaks wide enough to compress the ends that don't have the rubber. They come in different sizes, so everyone satys safe.

You are right, they are smarter than people give them credit for, think they all are. Because of their size, people don't think they can do some things and they will get you every time. Have learned to treat all the birds as I would a macaw or any larger bird, just not as large of a lock. They do keep you on your toes don't they.
