lovebird splayed leg

Hi I amonly 22 weeks into lovebirds, I have got a 3 week old Approx chick, it's legs were splayed directyl behind, not to the side, I put a sponge on yesterday, placed it into a dish, fairly restricted, a problem ... when the chic wanted to turn the sponge stayed put so a leg came out, I have narrowed the sponge given it more room, It now moves around freely,.... shows off by STANDING & preening... all in 24hrs. question do I allow this freedom or restrict
.
Ihope I have posted location as I could not find ...NEW THREAD on other page
