Yeast infection in baby

Can anyone tell me the chances for survival with proper treatment for a 21 day old pacific (?) parrotlet with yeast infection? He was listless, had just started refusing feeding and obviously had the tell-tale droppings to indicate yeast.
The thought of this little blueberry dying scares me like crazy and I know it's more than possible, just not any more clear than that. I've never had a neonate with yeast infection before. Then again, I've never had a bird as small as a parrotlet before either.

Thankyou muchly.

:( I wish I could help! There are only two people on this site with a parrotlet and I am sorry that I don't know more. Have you taken Blueberry to the vet? What did they say?
Please keep us updated!

Hi Emmalou......Chances are great if the yeast infection is recent and if ya get it the proper treatment immediately. Even if the infection has gotten into the system and not just the crop. If it is in the bird's system already then ya need a systemic yeast killer such as Diflucan (Fluconazole). If still in the crop only and not advanced then ya can kill it with simple Nystatin. If old sour food is in the crop it needs to be emptied out by someone qualified to do that ASAP.....Good luck to you both......Where are ya located if ya don't mind saying.....

Thank you both!

I took Blueberry straight back to the breeder Saturday morning when I noticed the first droppings smelled/looked odd. Breeder had him all weekend and started the meds for yeast due to the state of the droppings. Vet also confirmed it. So far he's doing fine and eating well and I'll know tonight what the game plan is for the next few days. I'm praying everything turns out okay. The breeder will keep hand-feeding him until he's strong enough to come back to me and I have no worries about bonding since he's so young still. I'm crazy about the little guy.
I took him straight to the breeder because I thought he had sour crop and I'm not qualified in any way to do the crop lavage procedure. I'm so glad I found this place- it seems really nice!
Jessica- thankyou so much for the links. Love your little birdy! How long have you had your little one? Is there anything about parrotlets in particular you think I should know?
Joel- If you get a spare moment can you tell me if there is a way to help prevent yeast infections in the future while hand-feeding? (besides normal cleanliness precautions that I already follow). The breeder told me that sometimes it "just happens" but I have such a hard time accepting that. Would a probiotic be helpful in the formula or as a supplement? I'm in Cinci, OH right now- where are you at?

Hi Emma! It sounds like Blueberry is pulling through. I love that name by the way...very cute! I know how easy it is to get attached right away and I am sure this has been difficult. Let us know when you bring him home.
I have had Tiki since last May and bought her from a breeder in California. It was instant love for both of us. She is just the sweetest thing. I couldn't ask for a better parrotlet. She was very hand shy at first and that took some work. But once she got comfortable with my hand she has had no trouble whatsoever stepping up. Actually she does everything I ask her to do. I remember reading that you have other birds so I am sure you know about the basics like what to feed, ect? A website that I would recommend is www.littletweet.com. Check out the parrotlet resources section for all the basics. What kind of cage set-up do you have out of curiosity? I know Tiki loves lots of natural branches to climb on and she LOVES looking out the window. I would also recommend a playstand. I just potted a large manzanita branch and she loves to spend time on that. Oh...and she only gets moody if she doesn't get enough sleep. I know 10 hours was recommended to me. I am in East Lansing, MI by the way...so we are kind of close...sort of. :D
Keep us updated!

I just thought I'd let everyone know that Blueberry passed on last week. She just never thrived or held her temp well enough.

Thanks for the support I got here. I appreciate it. I'm going to stick to the larger birds- the little ones scare the pants off me now.

Emmalou,

I am so sorry to hear about Blueberry. I am sure she has happily crossed the rainbow bridge by now and is waiting to meet you there when the time comes! Glad to know that she had someone who cared sooooo much about her during her short time here on Earth.

Lindy
