I got my new baby today!!

Today I went to the bird store and they had parrotlets for sale! 2 clutches from the same breeder that they've used a long time always with healthy birds. The ones that were ready to go to new homes were hatched 5/20/08 and were weaned about 10 days ago. They are pacific blue. I picked one of the males. He is so cute! I never realized they were so small! He weighed
26 grams at the shop. I will make an appointment this week to bring him to my vet.

I have him in my bedroom for the time being, so that he can get used to me, and also to keep them separated until the vet gives him a clean bill of health.

I looked at the other clutch also, which weren't weaned yet...I have never seen anything so darn cute!! These were green. I loved them, but I wanted one TODAY!!

So, trying to decide what to name him, the clerk at the store said
his "his band number is O D H number whatever. When I heard O D I said, that's it! His name is Odie!

I got him home and prepared his cage with lots of perches and toys and a happy hut, nice fresh water and the safflower mix they used at the store, and let him chill for a while. Then I took him out and gave him scritches and talked to him for about 15 minutes. He's back in his cage now, and sleeping on his little boing.

He is so cute. I can't get over how small he is...I always thought they'd be about lovebird size.

When my daughter finally gives me my camera back, I'll post some pics!

Congratulations! What cage do you have?

They ARE so small, yes, smaller than a Lovebird for sure. The cutest things!!!! I am sitting with my Chipper girl on me right now. She is making sweet sounds. We are very close buddies.

I want to add that having a sleepytime routine is so nice for them. I sing and play a little music box for Chipper when she goes to her sleep cage. She is covered at night.

Congratulations on your new baby Parrotlett!

I confess, I'm jealous and Parrot Green with envy! I'm just itching to get one of the little guys. But for now, I will share in your joy and live vicariously through the pictures I know you'll post, and the adorable ones of Sally's Chipper.

Congrats!

Huge congratulations on your new Parrotlet baby! Share photos when you have a chance. As a new parrotlet owner, I wanted to share something that I have learned along the way...these guys are very sensitive, and prefer to have their cage placement in a quiet corner where they can see everything but not be in the midst of everything. I didn't know this, and had some problems with my two becoming fearful of everything. Since moving to a quieter corner, they are much happier and playful. They do need a full 12 hours of quiet and dark sleep too. I cover mine also and they prefer this. It really is amazing how tiny they are. Every time I have one on my shoulder I have to keep checking to make sure he or she is still there. They weigh so little! Can't wait to read about your baby parrotlet. They are such little gems.

Right now he's in the 18x18x26 until I get a new larger cage for my other two, then he'll inherit their old cage (which is actually not "old"). I don't cover any of my cages at night, there's no drafts here and no chance of a chill (south florida). When I move him to the "bird room" which is actually an fully enclosed porch, he'll have the company of my other two during the day. There are no air conditioning vents out there, and lots of sunlight (not direct sun, just cheerfully light during the day) and a nice view for them.

Odie, what a cute name! (My canary is Ole...sounds just like Odie but w/ an L) Piccolo sings all day long...I bet yours will start making cute sounds too when he gets comfortable in his new home.
