Question wood preperation???

sorry, i meant: wood preparation!!!

hi,
i want to cut my orange tree back this week b/c a large oak limp fell on part of it and i since i will have the branches anyway, i might as well make a play gym for my blue p-let talon... i have heard that you have to bake the wood first. any comments or suggestions on this? if you are supposed to bake them, how long and on what temp? why cant i just cut them and used them since birds outside sit and chew on them all the time.

do a vinegar rinse & rinse with water well.

200* 30 minutes.

at least thats what i've read :)

(you shouldn't use them w/o baking because OTHER BIRDS/insects have been on them... and wild birds/bugs carry who knows what)

If you're concerned about wild bird droppings, you can mix up a 10% bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water), soak the wood, let sit for 5 to 10 minutes, rinse really well, then rinse again, and maybe yet again. You want all the chlorine gone. Let dry in the sun if possible, and it's ready to go, no need to bake. That should get rid of insects also, but the vast majority of insects aren't toxic to birds.

play gym

i built the play gym today. i used some orange tree branches from my yard. i cut them, and baked them. left them to cool and went to the thrift store, bought a serving tray. i used the tray as my base, attached my branches and filled the rest of the bare spots in with dowel rods. i have tons of spots to hang toys which i will go get this week. the base needed more support, so i used an old board out of a drawer as a "washer" to the screws going through the tray into the branches from underneath. it gave the tray more support. the tray cracked in one spot when attaching a dowel to it. thus i had to cover the crack with a ball canning jar lid. worked quite well, talon loves it. and it wipes clean!
