The two boys

Cello, Mexican Parrotlet, was given to me in November 2007 by an owner who didn't have time for him anymore. He is wild caught (something I hate!), and is one sweet and friendly little guy, a great shoulder bird, very affectionate with lots of personality. I wanted to get him a companion, and would never buy a wild caught bird, so no possibility for another P'let. (The Mexican Parrotlets are not raised in captivity here since they are difficult to breed and cheap to trap.) So the first of May I bought a young male Budgie hoping he would turn into a companion for Cello. After quarantine I introduced them, still caging them separately, but out for playtime. They're both flighted.

My sweet little Cello turned into an open-beaked monster for a week or 10 days, then they started preening each other and eating together. They've been caged together now for a month, and are getting along very well. The photo shows how they sleep every night. Very cute!

*The Mexican Parrotlets are more mild mannered than the Pacifics, and I don't know that this combination would work with a Pacific Parrotlet!

Mexican P'lets aren't in the pet trade in the U.S. (or at least if they are, the numbers are miniscule) because they are difficult to breed in captivity, unlike the proflific Pacifics. Green-rumps and Spectacled are available in the U.S. in much smaller numbers than the Pacifics, and both are said to be a bit less feisty than the Pacifics, as are the Mexicans.
