I know I did wrong!
I bought my bird at a flee market! Just today! She has been settling in her new cage for about 4 or 5 hours now and I just went in to slowly move her millet and she flew into the corner of the cage. When I sat down I heard something drop, when I checked it out it was an egg! It broke on the bottom of the cage! OK..Now..What..? Do I need to put a nest in there? How many will she lay? I know that they won't be fertile, but should I let her sit on them, if so how long? What kind of nest do Parrotlets use?
I know I did wrong, but I need your help! |

I have no idea, but I'd put a nest in just to make it comfortable for her. I wish we had flee markets in Seattle that sold birds! But, on the other hand, probably just as well because I'd have sooooooo many birds :)

She said she had 19 birds at home and couldn't take care of them all anymore. She was selling 3 larger birds also. She wasn't very helpful and didn't seem all that knowledgeble, but I had to have her, and I will learn what I need to know!

There is a possibility they are fertile if she was housed with a male. I would not be adding a nest as this only encourages egg laying. Hopefully the move and upheaval of a new home will disrupt this. Any intact eggs I would be boiling or nuking then returning to her as taking eggs away can encourage her to replace them.

Good Luck with your new little parrotlet.
Sorry can't answer about the laying. But do make sure she her diet has added calcium, or calcium supplements. Hens need a good supplement as it takes a lot out of them making eggs. |

I would give her the opportunity to lay her eggs and sit on them fertile or not. This is nature here guys and gals, you can always candle the egg to see if it is fertile or not. I would also keep her isolated for a period from the other birds after all you purchased her in a Flea Market. Hopefully she is healthy, and if her eggs are fertile are you prepared to care for them? Your option is to contact a breeder if they do hatch if you no longer wish to have hatchlings. No matter what you decide good luck and congrats on your new addition.

NO nest. That will only make it worse. You need to discourage her as much as possible. Let her finish laying her eggs & let her keep them for about a month (and only take them away if she has completely abandoned them). Remove broken ones & boil any that she successfully lays to ensure they don't hatch -unless you are experienced in hand rearing chicks. I really think she will stop after this cycle because she is in a new environment... she was moved/disturbed mid lay so I wouldn't doubt the possibility that she might start up again once she settles in again. Good Luck. To help avoid egg laying: Avoid any kind of nesting materials... & use a grate if your cage has one. Cover her cage for 11-12hrs a night if she starts to get hormonal so she thinks its winter time.... A week or 2 should break the cycle. Offer her peas... I've read recently they can reduce hormone levels. Make sure she is on a good, varied diet. Rearrange the cage a little every couple days..
