Help please

Hi Im new to this having a bird thing.
I rescued a parrot this morn of the middle of the road. He/she was soaking wet and couldnt fly. So i caught it and bought it inside and put it in a cage and now what do i do . I got some parrot food from the shop.
I done a internet search on what kind of parrot it was and came up with nilcho.
Ive attached a pic of him/her (waiting for kids to come home from school to name it).
If anyone can give me some information on how to care and what type of bird, whether male of female it would all be appreciated.
oh forgot to add that its head is light blue with a red stripe around it and has a red part on the end of its beak. And a brown square on the back where its wings attach and yellow blotches on the rest mixed in with green. its about the size of a budgie to.
Thanks
FeralChick

first of all - i can't be of much help whether it's a he or she since i haven't seen a guy like this before... *grabs books to read up*

generally, you can never go wrong with some seeds - though it's not the main food for a bird (generally lots of veggies, some fruit, pellets, and some seeds), he'll definitely eat it and after being out and about for an unknown period of time he's probably hungry.

also, keep him warm - do you have a cage for him, or another place where he can bundle up a bit and get a little comfortable? that would be a good thing too

That looks like a Lorikeet - if it is, it CANNOT have seed. It must have a nectar diet. Seed will kill it. Do you have a better picture?

I know this may sound crazy, but can you describe the bird's tongue?

he is a MUSK LORIKEET
which means he is a nectar eater

OTHER NAMES
Red-eared Lorikeets, Green Keets

SIZE
Length about 22 cm (9"), weight about 60 grams

SEXING
Little or no difference between sexes. Female may be somewhat duller in colour, particularly on the head, but this is not very reliable. Surgical or DNA sexing should be used to confirm the sex of pairs.

NATURAL OCCURENCE
The Musk Lorikeet inhabits mainly Eucalypt forests and woodlands in coastal areas from Southern Queensland, through New South Wales and Victoria to South Australia. Common to abundant in the south, but rare north of Sydney. It can occur in flocks of several hundreds around stands of flowering trees. In general the Musk Lorikeet relies on flowering native trees and shrubs for food, but can be a pest in commercial orchards and will sometimes eat half-ripe grain crops. Breeding is mostly August to January.

A The diet is typical of Lorikeets, as covered in the introduction to the Lorikeets.

MUTATIONS
There appear to be no natural mutations of the Musk Lorikeet, however an Olive Musk has been developed by crossing with Olive Scaly-breasted Lorikeets.

The Musk is kept in very low numbers as a pet in Australia. Like most other Lorikeets, government regulations, with an annual licence fee to keep a native bird, means that most potential owners are discouraged from buying them. They do however make a most delightful pet, quieter than the Rainbow, but almost as playful. I am uncertain of their ability to talk, and would suspect that it is not likely to be as good as the Rainbow, Red-collar and Scaly.

Lisa - looks like she is still on line - hopefully she has read these posts. Good job, Lisa! I just knew it was a Lory.

FeralChick - here is another link with a picture. Birds in Backyards - Musk Lorikeet (Glossopsitta concinna) Fact sheet

It is IMPERATIVE that this bird receive Nectar - not what you get from a Garden Center for hummingbirds. You need Lory Life has a power and a nectar that you mix with water. Is there a bird store in your area? This bird must have this. For now, you can give it mashed up fruits but they cannot stay in the cage for more than two hours.

I assume you took all the seed out? They cannot digest seed. It really will kill him.
