Cape Parrot?
Does anyone own a cape parrot? If so, what are they like? They seem like a rather rare breed. I never hear anyone talking about them and I don't think I've ever seen one in a bird store.
I see on this site http://www.capeparrot.org/ that they are supposed to be very rare both in the wild and captivity, so maybe that is why I've never seen one. If you guys have never seen that website before you should check it out. They have some fantastic videos of Thor talking. He's adorable. |

If you have trouble finding the videos you have to click on "Cape Pictures" on the left vertical menu. Then "Videos of Thor" is the third on the list that follows. I thought I would explain for anyone interested because it took me forever to find it.

Hi,
I have a Male Cape Parrot. He is called Miggs. They are great birds. About the same size as an african grey, really good talkers and love to play. We did have a breeding pair until a couple of months ago aswell |

From what I have read they tend to be pretty melow birds... so may do fine with others.... there was once another member here who owned an un-cape parrot, which got along with one of her others, I think it was a blue headed pi? It's just too bad this member is no longer with us! The photos were all gorgeous, and the uncape looked like she always had a smile on her face!!!!

There is a Cape Parrot for sale at the Bird/Pet Store up the street. They are very mellow unique looking birds. He is very sweet, he is still about 6 months old. He plays just fine with the three Amazon babies on the stand he is on. Loves to be picked up and talked to. Pretty hefty pricetag though.

I have met a very nice Cape Parrot. He is a great bird. He'd be one to scoop up if the right opportunity came up at the right time.

Hi! We are owned by a male cape pff (fusicolis subspecies) . He is 10 mos. old and a real gem. He has started talking, and is very affectionate. There has been no biting so far, just some head butting and yelling when he is feeling particularly feisty. He always rethinks these tantrums and runs for scritches afterwards. Remarkably we had no "break-in" period.
When he came out of his travel crate from the airline (breeder shipped him from Indiana to NJ) he came right to us and it has been a mutual love-fest ever since.(we got him in May) If you check out the forum on the site you mentioned-Capeparrot,org- you will see that there are several stories of male capes becoming aggressive or obsessed with/towards other birds when they get hormonal @ 3 years of age. Several people have resorted to hormone shots to ease this issue. Our Jazz is an only fid so hopefully we will not experience this particular problem. Several owners have noted that they think Capes might be better as singe birds. Again, this is not my experience, just what I have read in a Cape specific forum. Al possible negatives aside, Jazz is a fabulous bird, altho he is looking a little worse for wear right now. He is going thru his first heavy molt. His tail is sadly lacking, and he has lost almost all of the orange splotch on his head. His orange socks are growing in a little more every day, and just this week the first orange feather broke thru on one wing where his orange shoulder pads will be when he finally loses all his baby feathers. Sorry this was so long, I love to talk about my baby, :) Tom we could do parrot swaps like the crazy wife swapping show. I would love to show Davey and Bing around NJ! |

Hi Beth,
I am still on Maggie's waiting list for a pff female. It is hard waiting but I've only heard good remarks about Maggie & her birds. Meanwhile, I am saving up money for her, her cage, her toys, her playstand, etc :0 I love hearing about Jazz! Ivy Mom
