..as soon as the cage door is opened they fly up to the light and would stay there very happily all day, trying to catch them is a nightmare, they dont seem to want to be touched anymore..is all my hard work been for nothing or can they be trained to be more tame? they are now 9 weeks old.. any feed back would be great
Ok, first, your hard work was definitely worthwhile because they survived and are healthy. Yes, they can be trained, but I'm not sure what you expect by saying "tame". To many people, if a bird will come to the side of the cage and let them scritch, that is tame. Some want the bird to sit on their hand or shoulder and some want the bird to cuddle.
I assume that you want them to stay flighted, since you have not clipped their wings. I would suggest putting them in separate cages side by side while you work with them. You can start by putting a perch on the cage door and having them come to the perch to take a treat from your hand. Most of the little birds love millet. If you don't feed millet in the cage, but offer it from your hand only when the bird is on that door perch, then that is a good way to start. When that behavior is perfect every time (every time you walk up to the cage, the bird runs to the door perch and stays there). Then you can think about progressing past that point.
You have to remember that the red rumps are not cockatoos, and their idea of handling may be different than yours. If they get on your hand, don't hold their feet and don't put your hands around them to restrain them. If you have to restrain them or catch them, use a towel.
Hope that helps,
