How about some Rosellas, Kakarikis, Red Rumps these are parakeets but just as good as parrots.

Parrots have to have there own aviry away from other species. So if your going to do that then Caiques are good.

still looking for what to get?

What about red fronted macaws. They have beautiful personalities and are even more beautiful in person.

Parrotman, I am from Brisbane, what part of Australia are you from? There will be a huge bird fair on May 1, if you can wait that long you will have a better selection.

In your price range you will have very limited choice if you want both colourful and good talkers. Rosellas are gorgeous but I never heard of them being talkers or good pet birds, in fact I just looked through the Parrot Society journal and no one has handreared rosellas. If they did, I would buy them! You might also try rainbow lorikeets (but they need a nectar diet so a little more difficult to care for otherwise I would have them), princess parrots, Indian ringnecks, Alexandrines, Red-rumps, King parrots, Turquoisine.

If you want a pet handreared bird, the only thing in your budget would be cockatiels (which I highly recommend as being charming and friendly) and budgies. Quakers start at $300 each and conures start at about $450 each.

I just noticed an ad for a Bird Breeder's extravaganza tomorrow, Marsden SHS Sports Centre cnr Munchow and Chambers Flat Road, Marsden, QLD starts 10am. I may have a peek in myself, though I can't buy anything as I will be on holiday next month for 2 weeks.

Hey Tiki!

The breeder I use here in Maryland, M&T Exotic Birds hand-feeds and tames Rosellas! they are beautiful and their owners say the are great pets!

The only things she cautions about is they need to be let out of the cage alot and handled alot.

you can check out her website:

Just for everyones info!

sound like u aint have much room

it would be pushin the limit to breed karikis in and avairy 1.8 by 900 . but i know a family of birds that are more colourful cheaper and smaller which breed well... Neophemas.. for eg turquiose parrot ,, look it up on google. or scaret chested parrots. i have some babies to sell in SA australia . and i would sell them for 35$ each.. which is cheaper than the pet shops
