Unhappy Rainbow Lory and Budgie

Hey, I'm Mel. I need information regarding a rainbow lorikeet. At the farm where I work, they have a tame lorikeet who continuosly plucks his feathers. He isnt lonely, there are two others in the aviary. So please private message me if you can answer these:

- My handreared lorikeet (I rescued and handraised), has no tail and no flight feathers?

- Lorikeet plucking out his feathers?

- Budgie's breath really hot and continuosly panting/opening and closing beak?

Im desperate aye!

Someone post or message me! I need answers please!

First of all, I'd say get the budgie to a vet asap...panting is NOT normal and could be a sign of severe distress.

I'm no Lori expert but plucking is bad any way you look at it. Just because there are two other Lori's in the aviary, doesn't mean there isn't another reason the bird will pluck. Birds DO pluck out of lonliness but that certainly isn't the only reason....Could be dietary deficiencies...could be stress...maybe CAUSED by the others. Could be lack of emotional/mental stimulation. Could be medical....

Hard to know, to be honest...

It is often environmental but we need to know a bit more about both situations before assessing. Besides which, it really is about trial and error. A plucking bird is upset about SOMETHING....it really is up to us to figure out what it is since they can't tell us.

First things first....get the budgie looked at...

The only way to truly diagnose the causes of these symptoms- including the plucking- is to get both birds seen by an avian vet.

Could be PBFD (Beak & Feather Disease), also known as "Runners" because they can't fly. As far as I know, most lorikeets who suffer from PBFD are usually not affected by it healthwise and usually make a 'full recovery' from it. (assuming that the birds are treated with medication if any is needed) However, the virus is deadly for other species.

- Lorikeet plucking out his feathers?
Are the lorikeets on a proper diet? Are they in a large cage that gets plenty of daylight as well as darkness? Do they have ways to forage within their environment? Natural/safe branches they can chew and destroy? Do they have toys they destroy? Is the lorikeet sick? Does he have an infection? Is he allergic to something?

Plucking does not have one single cause as it can be a variety of issues, anything from behavioral to medical, and without a full CBC and Fecal done at an avian vets office, there's no way anyone can tell you what is causing the plucking.

- Budgie's breath really hot and continuosly panting/opening and closing beak?
Is the budgie overheated? Overweight? Did the budgie over-exert itself in exercise? Is it a hen having difficulty laying an egg???

Again, this is something that we cannot tell you the cause without knowing if perhaps the bird is sick. It may have a fungal issue that is causing the heavy breathing, or it could be something else. *WE* are not vets, and *WE* cannot give you a definite answer, only guesses.
