Brotogeris

I don't know where to post this, I guess conure is close enough?

How loud are these birds?

What are their qualities...pros and cons as pets compare to cockatiels and conures?

Actually there is a "budgerigars" section. A mod needs to move this.

Shades of my past. I had an orange chin as a kid. Couldn't find anything on them as to availability let alone breed info until the internet era and even then it took me years to succeed. A few years ago I located this breeder:

Caique Breeder - White bellied & Black headed Caiques - Brotogeris Parakeets - Shady Pines Aviary

they have several of the brotogeri's and some info on the birds.

My experience with a live caught Woolworth purchased bird was that once tamed it was a very bonded, loyal and intelligent bird. I was close to getting one a few years ago.

As for noise, until I left home for summer camp one year and my mother felt "guilty" it was in it's cage all day and she left him on her shoulder for hours he was very quiet. Hardly ever screeched. But when I got home he would yell constantly if he was in his room and we were home. He'd start when the car hit the driveway. And it was loud.

My guess is that carefully raised and not spoiled one would make a delightful pet...

Good luck, and on searching the brotogera forum could not find anything on this group

Good info gmermel!

hsmoscout...
Although not specifically a conure, Brotogeris are a type of parakeet and do come from South and Central America, budgies come from Australia.

If anywhere, I would suggest re-posting it in bird board discussion.

Personally, I have never seen any sold in my area, Vancouver Canada. I am not much help.

There still isn't much available info. Searching just now I don't even find the breeder I linked to above and I know I found them via google back when. Obviously they are not a terribly popular breed. Probably since they aren't as attractively colored as a lot of the other species of similar size and personality.

I think it's the "parakeet" specification that gets everybody confused...

By the way, what is your interest in them? Have you found one in a store? A friend has one? I ask because as I've said I'm one of their fans and it took me decades to even learn that was what I had back then they are so rare/unpopular.
