This cage looks filthy and the perches (?) are atrocious. I dont want another bird, but not sure what to do. I hate to see birds in such horrid conditions.

That is horrible, even if you could take the bird for a short while and then rehome him eventually to a great home it would be great. That is just not a good life.

this breaks my heart - a WCP is my dream bird.... are you around in this area? if i was just a bit closer, i'd take him immediately (my greencheek's old cage is bigger than that piece of poop - disgusting)

edit: off to mapquest to check driving distances

The guy emailed me and said $250. I am thinking of buying it just to rehome it. Is that crazy? My caique and conure will hate it if I keep it. I also need a bigger cage. What do you all think?

i'd say go for it - at least that way the bird gets into the right "circle of people" (aka the ones who care). i have to check around here, but i might be interested IF i can do it.... who needs a couch anyways

Hello, I live in California but I really hope that someone helps out this bird!

I adopted a Sun Conure that was in a similar situation about a year ago. The old owner wanted to change $450 for the bird and the very small (probably a Parakeet) cage. The bird and the cage were very dirty. He also would not let anyone get near him, and his wings were not clipped so if he managed to get out of the cage he would fly away and no one could catch him. I decided to adopt him b/c I didn't think anyone else would and I could not talk the previous owner into rethinking the price!

I worked with him for several months until he would step up and allow human contact. I also moved him to my Senegal's older (but much bigger) cage.

Eventually I was able to rehome him. I ended up charging less then what I initially paid for the bird (so I lost about $100) but it was worth it! I still get pictures and stories from his new owners! Plus, I absolutely love Pionus', every one of them that I have interacted with has been very sweet!

Good luck!

That is horrible. I would take him too - without a doubt. Paco needs a friend anyhow.
If only I lived closer. Please rescue the poor bird. He needs a better enviroment!

I dont know anything about pionus'! If I buy him, does anyone live in or near Phx. who might want to adopt him? I just think my caique and conure are going to be very angry with a new bird. I birdsat a neglected conure (and ended up rehoming it) once. Both birds freaked out when I held her. I know they wanted to kill her. They never touched her, but I know if they could have... Zeek and Rocky are both being so sweet right now. Very affectionate and playful. The caique can be a mean little devil, and I know a new bird will set him off, and I dont want to upset the balance we have right now. Also, I have my birds out of the cage several hours a day and worry about trying to manage 3 birds. At the same time, it seems that pionus are good quiet birds from what I have heard.

I asked the guy if he would come down on the price and he said NO. I cant bare to see him in that filthy cage and I am worried that someone from a bad home will take him. What do I do? I dont even have a big enough cage to use temporarily but I can figure something out.

If you have the money and can afford to get him out of his current home, plus maybe a vet checkup, and be able to keep him separated from your two birds, then go for it.

Otherwise, it may help to find a bird club in your area (certainly there's got to be at least one!) and notify them of this bird, so that maybe someone in the club could help the bird out... OR find avian vets who may be able to help out, too.

I got a female cockatiel from a similar situation.... she HAD a mate but he died so I was given the female (months later after the male was killed). I adopted out one of my other cockatiels (Sunshine), and the person who adopted her has a relative that is interested in adopting a tiel from me! The only one here I'd consider adopting out right now is Faye, however, I would feel better if I knew she was eating a good diet first....

This is what she came from...
