Question Different pionus species

Wow, this board seems pretty dead. I'll ask a question to liven it up. :icon_wink

I was considering getting a poinus. I found some information online about the different species, but a lot of it seemed to have conflicting information. What's the differences between the species? What would be the best pionus for a working apartment-dweller?

One other thing I was wondering... What's the plural of pionus?

Get a dictionary - who knows??? I'm kidding, and my head hurts too bad to look it up right now. Just don't get more than one and you won't have to worry about it!

I, too, am considering a pionus but don't know a whole lot about them. Since my Gray and my Eclectus don't exactly get along and the Gray takes it out on my husband and me he seems to be the most logical one to go. I hate to see him leave because I raised him from such a little dough baby and he used to be so sweet, but all he wants to do now is bite the crap out of us, won't get out of the cage, etc. Such decisions!

I was just getting ready to hit either Google or Ask Jeeves to see what I could find about a pionus. The people at the bird store said one of those would probably be a good match. I'll let you know if I find any good sites if you'll do the same for me!

Good luck -
Critter

Why don't you try and work through your Grey's biting stage instead of just replacing him because he's not perfect or up to your standards? How sad.

Go to the ask the experts board or post more info here or on the Grey board and you will be able to get help on how to deal with it. I've read that Greys often go through biting stages as they mature. I find it quite tragic that just because the bird is biting, you're going to pass it along to someone else to deal with and get a "new" bird in its place. What are you going to do when your baby Pionus matures and starts attacking or biting you? What if he starts screaming? I think I know the answer. Male Pionus often act like male Amazons once mature. Do some research on both Pionus and Amazons as their personalities tend to mirror eachother. Pionus tend to be much quiter than Amazons, however, they have the ability to be just as loud.

The pi is a great bird, but I think like all parrots if you do not keep up the attention and handleing they too could be come a pest. They are good for appartment due to the fact they are not too loud, but if they are left alone a lot they may grow to resent that and learn to be louder to get your attention which is what a lot of them can do. Good luck on your research and fids...

Don't give up with your Grey. I went through exactly the same thing with my Timneh he turned into a monster for just over a year and gradually reverted to his previous self. He is pretty much back to "normal" now and even tolerates my other half which is something he never used too do (used to divebomb him all the time). Only time I have to watch him now is with visitors
