I think Griffin might be trying to talk?

How old are Pionus before they start to try to talk? Griffin started making some noises, like he was trying to mimic one of the few words I keep repeating to him.

I talk to him a lot and have been trying to get him to mimic words by repeating the basics "Griffin", "Step Up", "Apple" (his favorite treat so far), and "Good Boy". I usually say the word a few times while bobbing my head up & down (I probably look a bit like a clown I'm sure).

He makes noises when he sleeps (like talking in his sleep when he dreams), but today started sounding like he really is trying to talk. Then I would say something back to him and he does it again. Is there such a thing as baby talk with parrots or is he too young still and I'm just imagining things? He is only 4 1/2 months old still, DOH is 7/8/08.

I have no clue about Pi's but I know my baby tiels started to mimic around 4 months old so I would think it's possible. Pi's are not known for talking but I have heard of some that say a few words and one BH that talks up a storm.

Monty's not a talker, he's a squeaker and a squealer but I know what he means even if no one else does, lol.

Griffin's dad is a talker so I figure he is more likely to try a few words. I never got my tiels to mimic anything other than a wolf call (Whistler did that mostly) and our other tiel Baby mostly clucked like a chicken if she said anything at all. I hope he is trying, it would be fun to get him to say a few things. BTW, I love your pics!

Thank you! That's my clan and some days I would trade 'em all for another Monty, lol. I saw your pics of Griffin and he is so cute! Now I want a baby Pi but there aren't any pi breeders in my state, which could be a good think, lol. I would think that if his dad is a talker then it's more likely that he's trying to talk. Just keep trying, hopefully he'll surprise you!

Dino is actually pretty quiet for a male but he mimics Moe, their dad, the most. Bugsy says hello and pretty bird on occasion (usually in the middle of the night when he wants to talk to me) and mimics everything that Zeke does. Of course the wolf whistle is favored by all.

Monty does mimic a canary, lol. It cracks me up, this big bird sounding like a little canary...and he does it perfectly too.

Pi's are not really good at talking. They can talk with a raspy voice. My little one say's uh o, no, hungry, and of course his whistles. He can mimic the cell phone as it is about to die(the beeping) he has had me a few times...LOL
I know that they can talk, but you would have to work with them alot.
Great to hear this about anther PI. I love mine to death even though the little one loves to bite...Which I am working on with him.
Best of luck...

No Pionus aren't the best talkers and most of the time it's hard to make out what they are saying in that raspy voice.
Our Gracie started talking at 7 or 8 months old.
The loudest & clearest thing she says is "JUDY" (my wife's name),
"Pretty bird" or "Gracie is such a pretty bird", and "I love you".

She hasn't got the vocabulary that our Budgie Petey does, but she loves copying sounds...
cellphone beeps,
computer clicks,

and every galdurn sticky hinge & squeeky floorboard in the entire house.
