Bird in distress

Hi
Please can you help. I visited a pet store recently and saw what I think are two Pionus they were for sale for £250 for the pair. Today I went back there and there was only one. Whe I went the first time they looked very scruffy and were picking feathers from each other bald in places etc. Today the one whcih was left looks alot worst lots and lots of feathers missing no toys in cage the water s/he has has not been changed for a while as is green in the container or on the plastic and he looks really sad. I was going to say something to the store but thought I would do some research forst as not sure of the breed he looks like a Pionus but is blue and red with bits of green (would this be normal colouring for this breed. I have 3 cockatiels at the moment and can accomodate this bird at a strech but need some advice please. I can go and buy tomorrow but dont plan on paying much du to the condition and lack of funds myself. Any ideas?

Are you sure this is a Pionus you are seeing? Look on my website link in my post and see if the birds you see on my website look anything like the bird you are seeing. You may want to also ask what happened to the other bird that was there. They sound like they are in very poor health.

Also, if you should purchase this bird, you should take him to the vet right away, I'm sure something will be lurking within his little body. Drinking horrible water will promote bad things as well. Did you notice what type of food was in the cage... probably just seed.

Hi
I looked at your sire earlier it looks similar to the grren and red on your front page on the left with some bits of blue. There is no tag to say what it is so not sure. I was going to speak to them today but due to the fact I was so angry I thought I better not going back tomorrow. i'm pretty sure the other one must have died. do you know if these birds have any blue on them ever?do you have any pics cant find any on the internet.

WEll, if it is by chance a Blue Head, he would not have in his full blue color and if he is still under say 7 months old, he still could have a few of the red feathers that babies sometimes have but usually go away after first molt. I am wondering if it is a Pionus.

i'm not sure i just noticed the distitive short tail which he has do any other birds have tail feathers like this? He looks smaller than the ones on your site so maybe a baby. s/he is just eating seed at moment. my thought are get it tomorrow we have a cage spare, clean water new food, veg and some toys and see how it goes??

If you do buy him, it is very important to quarantine him away from your other birds in a room that they cannot enter. He may be very sick. You'll want to wash your hands/forearms and change your clothes after handling him or his things also. Be sure is you get him, to get him to the vet asap.
The pet store should (hopefully) be able to tell you what type of parrot he is.
Good luck!
