Swallowed
I am a new Pionus owner, although I have owned budgies and Cockatiels before, but I haven't had this happen before. My four week old parrot swallowed a small elliptical shaped foreign object. We don't have an avian vet in our area and by the time I was able to get the parrot to any vet at all was 8 hours later. I was told it had passed out of the crop and the best thing to do was continue to feed as normal and hopefully it will pass. It has now been 36 hours. Although the parrot has continued to feed as normal, it is clear he is agitated. His feet are cold. He has continued to poop and a couple of times he has spit up. The droppings are the same consistency and look normal, although smaller in size. No sign of the object yet. He alternates between being very agitated and relaxed and even sleeping peacefully at times. Even so, he is not his usual self. Is there anything I can do to help; should I be feeding him something that will help him pass the object?

I'm sorry to hear about your bird! I had a similar experience when my bird swallowed my post earring. I took him to the vet. The vet gave my bird anesthesia to remove the earring from his crop. The removal went fine but......my bird did not make it out of the anesthesia. I was crushed, shocked and still heart-broken. Birds do not recover well from anesthesia I realized after the event. I'll be thinking of you and hoping your bird can expel this object on it's own. Best wishes!

Why again did someone else by an unweaned baby, not to mention an age right out of the nest? How does a 4 week old get a foreign object? Was it seeds? I am just a little confused.

lets not assume he's not an experienced hand feeder and/or maybe from a different country where hand rearing chicks is not uncommon. The bird swallowed something it shouldn't have, it's not due to faulty hand feeding. Talula managed to disassemble a toy bell that was made for medium sized birds. I'm thankful she didn't swallow it. Accidents are terrible and people blame themselves.
Bud4, wish I could help. I gather you brought the bird to the vet, could he offer any suggestions? Winged Victory had some suggestions. hoping your Pi comes around soon.
